Dear friends in Christ—brothers and sisters who walk with Jesus every day.

It Is Finished: Becoming a Living Altar

In our busy lives, filled with worries about family, work, and the world around us, it’s easy to feel pulled in many directions. We’ve heard teachings about building altars—sowing seeds on mountains or raising higher ones to overcome troubles. But let’s pause and listen closely to what God is really saying. The truth is simple and freeing: It is finished! No blood, no special offering, no extra effort can add to what Jesus did on the Cross. That was the final altar, and its message still echoes with power today.

Think about this: An altar isn’t just a fancy structure in a church or temple. It’s any place or thing we dedicate—to God or to something else. When we give something fully to God, it becomes a holy meeting point between heaven and earth. But if we dedicate it to fear, anger, or wrong influences, it can open doors to darkness. From the Bible, we see this clearly. Noah built an altar after the flood to thank God (Genesis 8:20), and Abram did the same where God spoke to him (Genesis 12:7). These were simple acts of dedication, inviting God’s presence and blessing (Exodus 20:24). Yet, the Scriptures also warn us: Altars to false gods or idols will be broken (Ezekiel 6:4), because what we dedicate matters deeply.

It Is Finished: Becoming a Living Altar

The Heart of It All: The Altar Where Heaven Meets Us

Friends, you can spend time building grand things—like a beautiful home or a successful career—and still miss the most important altar: the one in your own heart. Every breath we take, every choice we make, can either draw us closer to God’s light or pull us into the world’s shadows. The greatest altar ever wasn’t made by people; it was the Cross of Jesus. There, on that rough wood at Calvary, God and humanity met in a way that changed everything. Justice and mercy came together, and when Jesus said, “It is finished” (John 19:30), He meant it. Every old curse, every family struggle, every fear was dealt with forever. No more need for endless sacrifices—His blood covers it all (Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 9:11-14).

Now, under this new promise from God—the New Covenant—He comes to live right inside us. As Jeremiah promised, God puts His ways in our hearts and minds (Jeremiah 31:33). Joel spoke of the Holy Spirit being poured out on all people (Joel 2:28-29), and Peter saw it happen at Pentecost (Acts 2:17-18). Paul reminds us that God doesn’t live in buildings made by hands (Acts 17:24-25); instead, we worship Him in spirit and truth, from the heart, anywhere and anytime (John 4:23-24). This is real freedom for everyday life—no rituals, just a close walk with Him.

Living as God’s Altar: A Call to Simple Surrender

Here’s the beautiful part, drawn straight from Romans 12:1-2: “I urge you, brothers and sisters, by God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” We don’t bring animals or gifts to a stone altar anymore. Instead, we become the altar ourselves—our whole lives laid down for Him. Our bodies are His temple, our hearts the place of offering, and His Spirit the fire that burns within.

Imagine this in your daily routine: When you dedicate your morning coffee time to prayer, it becomes an altar. When you choose forgiveness in a family argument, your home turns into sacred ground. But if we let pride or worry take over, we might build hidden altars without realizing it—ones that steal our peace. Do you want to see and experience God daily, everywhere, anywhere? Then Philippians 4:8 becomes an anchor for meditation: Whatever is TRUE – Truthful, avoid falsehood; Noble – Morally, JUST – as in Justice, PURE – Purity will see God; Love – As in Loving, unconditionally, Lovely; Good Report – Not bad report; Virtue; Praise Worthy. It says meditate, not just read, on these things and the God of peace will be with you. The Bible says the fire on the altar must never go out (Leviticus 6:12-13), so let’s keep our hearts warm with love for God. For instance, on a stressful day at work or home, pause and focus your thoughts on what is true, noble, and pure—it renews your mind and invites God’s peace to stay with you, turning ordinary moments into sacred ones. As the psalmist says, “I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy” (Psalm 43:4). Even in heaven, we see the souls under the altar crying out for justice (Revelation 6:9), showing how altars connect us to God’s eternal purposes.

Time to Act: Practical Steps for Today

Don’t just hear this—let’s live it out together. God is calling us to action, right where we are:

  1. Rebuild What’s Broken. Like Elijah repairing the Lord’s altar before fire fell (1 Kings 18:30), start by fixing what’s fallen apart in your life. Maybe it’s your prayer time that’s grown cold, or a relationship that needs mending (Matthew 5:23-24). Ask God to help you restore it—He’ll bring the order and the fire.
  2. Guard Your Daily Altars. You can’t serve two masters or two fires (Matthew 6:24). Check your choices: Is your work dedicated to God’s glory, or to chasing success? Dedicate your home to Him, and it becomes a place where heaven touches earth (Exodus 20:24). Raise your children in His ways, and they become living examples of His presence.
  3. Renounce the Wrong Ones. Some altars are hidden in our thoughts or past mistakes. But the Cross speaks louder than any darkness (Hebrews 13:10). Let go of fear, grudges, or old habits—partake in Christ’s sacrifice, and be joined to His victory (1 Corinthians 10:18).
  4. Live as a Walking Altar. Carry God’s presence everywhere. Renew your mind daily through His Word, and watch how He transforms ordinary moments into holy ones. This isn’t about big gestures; it’s about steady surrender.

A Moment of Honest Prayer: Confession and Renewal

Father in heaven, today we come to You humbly. We repent for any altars we’ve built that aren’t Yours—ones of self, pride, fear, greed, or compromise. We turn away from agreements with darkness, from superstitions or false ideas. We come back to the Cross of Jesus, presenting our lives—our thoughts, words, hands, and homes—as a living sacrifice. Send Your holy fire to purify us. Renew our minds and fill our hearts with fresh love for You.

Speak This Truth Over Your Life: A Bold Declaration

Say it with me, out loud, as a promise to God:

  • I am an altar for the living God.
  • My home is an altar to Him.
  • My worship is an altar.
  • My work is an altar.
  • The fire on my altar will not go out.
  • The blood of Jesus overcomes every wrong altar.
  • I am made holy by His sacrifice—once and for all.
  • It is finished!

Closing in Worship: Lifting Our Hearts Together

As we end, let’s lift our voices in praise, remembering God’s greatness in our simple lives. Sing along if you know it, or just let the words sink in:

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, You are holy, holy...
The universe declares Your majesty, You are holy, holy...
Lord of heaven and earth...

Early in the morning, I will celebrate the light...
And as I stumble through the darkness, I will call Your name by night...

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, You are holy, holy...
Precious Lord, reveal Your heart to me... Father, holy, holy...

Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth... (Repeat as your heart leads.)

Friends, this is our calling—to live as altars where God’s fire burns steadily. Step into it today with faith and joy. He is with you every moment. Amen.
