📖 JOHN 10 — THE GOOD SHEPHERD

Today’s Discovery Bible Study was a rich and interactive discussion as participants reflected together on John 10. Through thoughtful observations, practical applications, and personal experiences, the group explored what this chapter teaches about God, about people, and about our calling as disciples and shepherds of God’s people.

Below is a summary of the key lessons that emerged from today’s DBS discussion.

💡 What Did We Learn About God?

Our discussion revealed several beautiful truths about God and His Kingdom.

1️⃣ God Establishes Doors of Access

One of the first observations was that everything God created has a legitimate point of access.

A child enters the world through the womb.

A house has a door.

A nation has borders, passports and visas.

Nothing functions without God-ordained access.

Likewise, after mankind fell into sin, access to God could no longer be taken for granted.

Jesus declared Himself to be the Door.

He is God’s appointed access back into fellowship with the Father.

No one can bypass God’s way.

2️⃣ God Protects His Own

Jesus declared that no one can snatch His sheep from His hand.

This gives every believer tremendous confidence.

Our security is not based upon our strength but upon God’s faithfulness.

Nothing outside ourselves can separate us from Christ.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

3️⃣ God’s Sheep Hear His Voice

One of the clearest marks of belonging to Christ is hearing and responding to His voice.

This caused us to reflect deeply.

If His sheep hear His voice, then continual refusal to listen should cause us to examine our relationship with Him.

Discipleship is not merely knowing Scripture.

It is learning to recognize and obey the Shepherd.

4️⃣ God Gives Life

John 10:10 draws a sharp contrast.

The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy.

Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly.

Everything God does produces life.

Hope.

Healing.

Peace.

Restoration.

Joy.

The enemy always produces destruction.

This becomes an important test for discerning whether something reflects God’s character.

5️⃣ God Knows Us Personally

Jesus does not merely know His flock collectively.

He knows every sheep individually.

He calls each one by name.

Our relationship with God is deeply personal.

6️⃣ God Wants to Reproduce His Character Through Us

We reflected on Genesis 1 where God created mankind in His image.

We also connected this with Psalm 82 and Jesus’ quotation of it in John 10.

God continually reproduces His character through His people.

We are called to represent Him on earth by bringing justice, compassion, truth and righteousness wherever we are.

7️⃣ God Demonstrates Himself Through Works

Jesus told the Jews:

“Even though you do not believe Me, believe the works.”

Faith is demonstrated by evidence.

God’s presence should produce visible fruit.

Like Jesus, our lives should reveal the Father through practical acts of love, service and obedience.

👥 What Did We Learn About People?

Several important observations emerged.

1️⃣ Some People Have Already Made Up Their Minds

The religious leaders were not genuinely seeking truth.

They kept asking questions while refusing to believe the evidence standing before them.

This reminds us that we cannot force everyone to believe.

Our responsibility is faithfulness.

God alone changes hearts.

2️⃣ Hirelings Serve Differently From Shepherds

A hireling works for wages.

A shepherd serves because he loves the sheep.

When danger appears, the hireling runs away.

The shepherd stays.

This challenged every one of us.

Are we serving merely because of personal benefit?

Or because we genuinely love people?

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

3️⃣ True Shepherds Sacrifice

Jesus laid down His life for the sheep.

We discussed that giving our time, attention, compassion and energy is also laying down our lives for others.

Real ministry is costly.

Real shepherds continually give themselves away.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

4️⃣ Every Person Chooses One Of Two Kingdoms

John 10 presents only two directions.

The Kingdom of Life.

Or the kingdom that steals, kills and destroys.

Every action either builds people up or tears them down.

This became one of the strongest lessons from today’s discussion.

5️⃣ Not Everyone Values What Belongs To You

People rarely value your assignment as much as you do.

The owner protects.

The hireling abandons.

This principle applies in families, churches, businesses, education and even national leadership.

Ownership produces commitment.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

6️⃣ Be Slow To Judge

We reflected that many misunderstood Jesus.

Some called Him demon-possessed.

Others recognized the truth.

This reminds us not to judge hastily.

Instead, we should examine both the message and its fruit before reaching conclusions.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

7️⃣ God Uses Different People Differently

John the Baptist performed no miracles.

Yet Jesus confirmed that everything John said about Him was true.

Not every servant of God has the same assignment.

Some prepare the way.

Others plant.

Others water.

God gives the increase.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

⚠ Warnings We Saw

❌ Do not become a hireling.

❌ Do not seek selfish gain.

❌ Do not harden your heart when God speaks.

❌ Do not become an instrument of stealing, killing or destroying.

❌ Do not reject truth simply because it challenges your traditions.

❌ Do not remain where unnecessary danger exists.

Jesus Himself withdrew when people attempted to stone Him.

Wisdom is not fear.

✅ Applications For Our Lives

• Become a faithful shepherd.

• Listen carefully to God’s voice every day.

• Bring life wherever you go.

• Protect those God has entrusted to you.

• Serve selflessly.

• Represent Christ in your family, workplace, church and community.

• Allow your works to point people to the Father.

• Become a builder instead of a destroyer.

• Ask daily:

“Am I acting like Jesus…or like the thief?”

🙏 Personal Commitment

Our greatest takeaway today was simple:

“Be the Good Shepherd.”

As Christ is, so are we in this world.

Every day we are called to represent Him.

To love.

To protect.

To serve.

To encourage.

To give life.

May every conversation…

Every decision…

Every relationship…

And every ministry assignment…

Reflect the heart of the Good Shepherd.

🙏 Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for speaking to us through John 10.

Teach us to hear Your voice clearly.

Help us to become faithful shepherds who care for people with Your love.

Keep us from becoming hirelings who serve only for personal gain.

Fill us with Your Spirit so that our lives produce fruit that points others to Christ.

Help us to bring life, hope, healing and encouragement wherever we go.

May we faithfully represent Jesus until the day we see Him face to face.
