It was a typical Wednesday afternoon when the phone rang at the Smith household. Mrs. Smith was busy cooking dinner in the kitchen, while Mr. Smith was in his study, working on a project. Their two children, Timmy and Sarah, were in their rooms, doing their homework.
The phone rang for what felt like an eternity, but no one seemed to hear it. Mrs. Smith was too engrossed in her cooking, Mr. Smith was too focused on his work, Timmy and Sarah were too engrossed in their homework. The phone continued to ring, but no one bothered to answer it.
Just as the phone was about to stop ringing, Mrs. Smith finally heard it and rushed to answer it. To her surprise, it was her sister, calling to inform her that their grandmother had fallen ill and was in the hospital.
Mrs. Smith quickly hung up the phone and rushed to tell her family the news. Mr. Smith and the children quickly dropped what they were doing and they all rushed to the hospital to be by their grandmother’s side.
Thanks to Mrs. Smith’s quick thinking and the importance of answering calls, they were able to be there for their grandmother when she needed them the most. She was able to receive the medical attention she needed and made a full recovery.
The Smith family learned a valuable lesson that day – the importance of answering calls, no matter how busy they may be. They realized that missing a call could mean missing out on something important, and they made sure to always answer their phones from then on.
And so, the Smith family lived happily ever after, always answering their calls and being there for each other when it mattered most.

Isaiah 6:8
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
Harvesting crops is good because it feeds people. This type of work can be hot and tiring but it has a great reward. When we pray for harvest workers, Jesus said to ask God to cast or thrust them into the harvest. This is the same verb used to cast out demons. It is violent and messy. It is abrupt and sudden. We don’t ease into it. We are fired into the harvest. We don’t wade in the shallow end. We jump off the deep end. This is something we can’t necessarily control or manage. It happens to us. So keep your eyes open. You may find that you are fired into a whole new situation
where you stop being a consumer of religious truth and start to desperately hang on to God, way out of your comfort zone. This is a risky prayer but as we pray for
harvest workers, the Lord invites us to say like Isaiah, “Here am I , send me!”
For Reflection:
- Why did Jesus use an agricultural expression for something so important?
- What term would Isaiah have used?
Make Life Count:
- Go for a walk to somewhere you can see a skyline or people or Imagine God asking you ‘Who will go for us’. Tell Him your response.
