True Story on Attitude = 100% Success or Failure: The Hireling and the Shepherd – Which am I as a Leader? Am I a hireling or a shepherd? Who Am I? Who are We?

John 10:10-18

New International Version

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

Am I a hireling or a shepherd? Who Am I? Who are We?

Ladies and Gentlemen, what is crucial to note is that in 2017, P&G invested 300 million dollars in building a plant at Agbara, Ogun State, Nigeria. At the time, the plant was the largest single investment by a non-oil firm in Nigeria. It shut it down within a year! Citing restructuring of operations as its main reason. Add to that their desire more than 14 years ago to invest $2billion in Nigeria’s Gas Masterplan, so that they achieve the ultimate aim of exporting from Nigeria to other African countries and the Middle East, guess what, that didn’t materialize with government. Will it be out of place to assume that perhaps P&G refused to grease the palm of officials hence the government short circuited the idea?

My Modest Assessment of the Nigerian Nation is that Objectively, 90% of our leaders are hirelings while 10% are Shepherds.

To be subjective and considering our legendary abysmal results vis-a-vis our potential, I would say 99.9% are hirelings, while 0.01% are shepherds.
A hireling thinks about how they can use the position they have with the sheep(in this case, Nigeria) to benefit themselves exclusive of the consequence on the sheep. The hireling will jump ship once the sheep is in danger.

In simple terms, the hireling just doesn’t care about the sheep but his/herself.

My suggestion:
If you look carefully, we do not have a paucity of resources. We have oil, vegetation, gold, coal, gas, and almost anything you can think of that a nation
needs to succeed.

It goes without saying therefore that our problem is largely ATTITUDINAL.

1. Tribe is attitudinal
2. Religion is attitudinal
3. Politics is attitudinal

These trio are double edged swords. They can cut, hurt or save and secure depending on where the attitude swings.

You can trace ALL Nigerians and their idiosyncracies to the efficiency or deficiency of these three.

For us to be united as a people and have leaders with same, we must all come to understand the What the Attitude of A Shepherd is.

A Shepherd:

1. Sacrifices for the Sheep including Laying down his life for the Sheep of need be.
2. A Shepherds preoccupation is the safest pasture for the sheep.

3. A Shepherds focus is the security of the Sheep
4. A Shepherds pride is the health and wealth of the Sheep.
5. A Shepherds Glory or Shame is defined by the Sheep.

Therefore, Every child in Nigeria must be taught the culture of a Shepherd. And every leader must be chosen on the basis of their Shepherd’s traits.
I see no other way.

Thanks Ndubuisi Ekekwe for stimulating these thoughts.

The questions to consider:

Which am I as a Leader? Am I a hireling or a shepherd? Who Am I? Who are We?
