Title: Part 22 – Three Critical ACTION Steps to exercising BOLDNESS and FEARLESSNESS Amidst Kidnappers, Armed Robbers, Killer Policemen or Cops, Corrupt Politicians, Liberalism and ALL the Vicissitudes of Life
Extended Title – Part 22 – Enough is Enough to CAPTIVITY of Satan and Welcome to FREEDOM in Christ Jesus: Three Critical ACTION Steps to exercising BOLDNESS and FEARLESSNESS Amidst Kidnappers, Armed Robbers, Killer Policemen or Cops, Corrupt Politicians, Liberalism and ALL the Vicissitudes of Life + My Encounter with Armed Robbers + The Story of Archbishop Benson Andrew Idahosa, How his Baptism in the Holy Spirit transformed the ministry and Smith Wigglesworth battles to secure the real Baptism in the Holy Spirit despite visible anointed successes.
Friends, I woke up this morning with a word in my spirit – “BOLDNESS and FEARLESSNESS”. That word, led up to the development of today’s writing. I pray that Boldness and Fearlessness will be your and my portion as we confront kidnappers, armed robbers, killer policemen or killer cops, corrupt government or corrupt politicians, liberalism and the vicissitudes of life in our midst in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen
In the book of Proverbs 28:1
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
The wicked flee when no man pursues them, but the [uncompromisingly] righteous are bold as a lion.
Note that word “the wicked flee”. Isn’t it strange and out of place that the righteous are the one fleeing today? Where is our boldness? Why are we fearful? What kind of spirit are we made of? Is it God’s Spirit or Human Spirit or Satanic Spirit or a combination of a watered-down version? Were we really baptized in the Holy Spirit or did we just soak ourselves in water baptism, got out and thought we have had the Holy Spirit Baptism? Or did we have the baptism in the Holy Spirit and have become lukewarm because we have failed to feed on the word and witness or exercise our gifts? Has habitual sinful life quenched the Holy Spirit in our lives?
Read this: 2 Timothy 1:7
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.

Now, back to our todays message : Three Critical ACTION Steps to exercising BOLDNESS and FEARLESSNESS Amidst Kidnappers, Armed Robbers, Killer Policemen or Cops, Corrupt Politicians, Liberalism and ALL the Vicissitudes of Life + My Encounter with Armed Robbers + The Story of Archbishop Benson Andrew Idahosa, How his Baptism in the Holy Spirit transformed the ministry and Smith Wigglesworth battles to secure the real Baptism in the Holy Spirit despite visible anointed successes.
After I received that word today form the Lord, I did a search on these three words – Lion, Boldness and Fear Not and found out that there are one hundred and fifty-five (155) references to the word “lion,” forty-eight (48) times on “boldness” and three hundred and sixty-six (366) times on “fear not,” depending on the bible version you use. That sends a clear message to you and to me on the importance God attaches to the matter of Boldness and Fearlessness. Without these two attributes, we can’t even begin to exercise the authority and power God has deposited in us, His children.
There is something the early Christians had that we modern day Christians don’t. There is something in them that caused them to face authority and tell them the truth even if it means going to jail or dying for it. It is called baptism in the Holy Spirit and continuous infilling of the Holy Spirit power as they spend time in the word, preaching and teaching and exercising the gifts in healing, deliverance and restoration.
In their day, when they hear from a new believer, they ask, “Have you been baptized in the Holy Ghost?” Today, in our microwave, do it now Christian world, we ask, “Have you confessed Christ?” and we run them through 1 month, 3 months or one year of word input devoid of power. Accumulation of bible knowledge, devoid of power, without application in real life is nonsense. That kind of Christianity does not lead to conviction that can stand the fire that comes to everyone on the surface of the earth and more of it is bound to come as we race towards the end. Jesus said this and I quote:
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
11 And many false prophets will rise up and deceive and lead many into error.
12 And the love of [a]the great body of people will grow cold because of the multiplied lawlessness and iniquity,
13 But he who endures to the end will be saved.
How do we begin to endure in these times, without the fire power of the Holy Spirit burning, filling us and flowing out to touch our world despite the lawlessness and wickedness in our world? Let us return back to the baptism in the Holy Spirit, ensure we are filled and can outflow to others and keep the fire burning. Then Boldness and Fearlessness will be ours plenty in the name of Jesus Christ. Go on your knees, cry out to Him, ask Him to give you that blessed promise of the Holy Spirit today. Never stop until you receive. The Holy Spirit will give you utterance. Not the one somebody told you to say. The one the Holy Spirit bubbles from within you. You cannot stop it when He starts flowing out of you. After that, nurture it. Spend minimum of 2 hours in 24 hours daily in the word and exercise the boldness and fearlessness already in you. If you had the baptism and now is as if there is a rock on your head, go on your knees, ask for fresh infilling, ask for forgiveness if you have forgiven others.
If you receive Him, you will know and people around you will know something about you have changed because the Holy Spirit is fire, it burns anything and everything ungodly in us – Matthew 3:11. Genuine zeal for God emerges in Jesus name, amen. For the specific words on the Holy Spirit Baptism, I will include at the end of the post. Continue to repeat that prayer and if the Holy Spirit brings anything up, confess it and release yourself to Him to flow into and outflow to others through you.
My Encounters with Armed Robbers in November, 2010
November 2010, exactly seven (7) months after the national mission work of traveling to seven churches in each of the thirty-seven (37) state capital, including Abuja, Nigeria in 12 days, covering 7000 kilometers on the call to prayer against future calamity(ies) and a call to revival in the lands, I went out in my official car about 8 pm on that faithful day.
As I opened the door to the car, two young men accosted me with pistols. One said, “Waste him and let’s go.” One of them attempted shooting and it failed. The second shot into the air and commanded me to get into the car. The second that attempted shooting me hit the boot of his pistol on my eye glass, pushed me into the car and they drove off at top speed. I was completely fearless, as if there was an invisible shield standing between me and them. I began to preach to them and the guy at the back hit me behind the head with his pistol. They decided to drop me off and sped off with the car with my wallet in it.
As I got home, a word began to bubble up from deep inside of me – “The car will be returned within seventy-two (72) hours.” I spoke that word out from the depth of my spirit.
The next day, we were heading back to report to the police station and I found the car – Toyota Corolla with the bonnet slightly open, windows down, keys in the ignition and wallet exactly where I left it in the car. By the time the police arrived, I was told to start the car to see if it will start. The car started with one effort. They were startled! Asking if I was a man of God? I told them I love God and I began to preach to them as well. The car was snatched on a Friday evening and was returned on Monday. Exactly 72 hours after the snatching as the Spirit of God gave utterance that I spoke out in a commanding voice prior. Actually, the car was found in less than 24 hours but it spent another 2 days plus at the police station.
There are principles I learnt from that incident that can be applied in any adverse life situation and circumstances. Here are the 3 of them as follows:
Do you approach life with the boldness of a lion? You have everything it takes to operate in spiritual boldness like a lion!
Charging through the savannahs of Africa, the mighty lion is regal and fearless in his pursuit. Known as “the king of beasts,” he possesses courage and confidence that refuse to retreat from any threat or attack. With a roar that can be heard from miles away, a lion is an animal to be reckoned with. He is a symbol of fearlessness, strength and invincibility. In short, a lion is bold.
Proverbs 30:30 (NKJV) describes the lion as “mighty among beasts, who retreats before nothing.” With such a reputation for power and might, it is no wonder God used this animal to describe the demeanor He expects from His children in Proverbs 28:1: “The wicked flee when no one is looking, but the righteous are as bold as a lion” (NKJV).
Maybe you are reading this today and realize you haven’t been operating in spiritual boldness the way you should. Perhaps fear has been holding you back or you simply don’t know where to start. One thing you need to know today is this: Jesus didn’t die and defeat all of hell to have us quivering in the corner! He gave us dominion and all authority—but we have to operate in it! When you apply the following principles in your life, you will learn how to be bold as a lion.
1. Be Bold in Approaching God
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain….” –Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)
When you approach God in prayer, how do you show up? Are you confident or timid? Expecting to receive or just wishing and hoping? Asking or begging? Do you know you belong, or do you feel unworthy?
Why does it matter? Prayer is prayer, right? Not exactly.
The difference in how you come to the throne of God will determine whether you take possession of what you need or walk away empty-handed. Hebrews 4:16 tells us to come boldly so that we may obtain what we need. In other words, boldness is a prerequisite to receiving—because the fuel for boldness is faith.
So, where does boldness in prayer come from?
Your source of boldness is knowing who you are in Christ and what rights you have in your covenant relationship with Him. One of the rights Jesus secured for you at the cross is the right to come freely into the presence of God without condemnation, without insecurity and without the fear of not being heard.
I always have this consciousness that I carry God the Father, God the Son and by the powerful inner working of God the Holy Spirit inside of me and so when storm comes, that invisible presence can be felt and I can talk to these people about Him as I did in the car snatching episode. You have to do the same. Begin to pray in your prayer language – in tongues. It changes the spiritual atmosphere but don’t do that being fearful.
There has to be a knowing that God is in you and with you at that very moment. You can begin to pray confusion in their midst. Cause their guns to malfunction. Speak it out from the depth of your spirit. Have a scripture to back up your commands. I mean recall scriptures. You don’t start studying and meditating on the word in crisis. You deploy in crisis what you stored and meditated upon in secret. No soldier prepares for war in the frontline. You do that in the backside at peace times. Declare that they go to temporary sleep until you escape and they would have to obey because that is a word from a lion, the son of the creator of the universe. Remember this and remember God and declare daily to yourself –
Say this declaration from your heart especially whilst in the storm:
“ I am permitted to GO when it is Gods time BUT No one, no devil in hell or any of his children or grandchildren can take me out prematurely because the number of my days I must fulfill; the very hair of my head are numbers by God and non-drops without His knowledge; I am hid in Christ in God and whoever touches me has to touch God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit before they can reach me; I am royalty; I am anointed; and I am coming out of this place now unhurt; I am healed, delivered and restored in my spirit, my soul and my body in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen” Exodus 23:26; Luke 12:7, Matthew 10:30; Colossians 3:3; 1 Peter 2:9; Psalm 105:15; Isaiah 54:17;1 Peter 2:24
Ephesians 3:12 says, “Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.” That means Jesus paved the way between us and the throne room of God. Fellowship with Him is part of our covenant rights, so acting unworthy is disrespecting the price Jesus paid to get you there.
Take your house, for instance. You go into your house boldly—knowing it belongs to you. You don’t hesitate. You don’t question if it belongs to you. You certainly don’t go to the back door, trembling and saying, “Oh God, this is a fine, beautiful home. Help me, now. Oh, help me, Sir, to have the faith to go into this house.”
That house belongs to you. you live there. It’s yours. You are not stealing anything from God by stepping into that house with boldness, because He gave you the house.
The devil will work overtime to convince you that you aren’t worthy of boldly entering in. He doesn’t want you in there, and he certainly doesn’t want you making bold requests. But don’t let the devil trick you out of coming boldly to the throne—it’s where you belong.
When Jesus is abiding in you and you in Him, you know He loves you. You know the Greater One lives in you. There is no fear in love—so you know He is going to take care of you. That’s where your boldness comes from.
Boldness isn’t begging, pleading, wishing or hoping—boldness is knowing. It is confidence that when you pray according to the Word in faith, and as you live in obedience to God’s Word, you will receive what you ask (1 John 3:21-22).
You have a standing invitation from your heavenly Father to come boldly and take possession of what you need. So, start praying in the Name of Jesus, according to the Word of God, and expect to receive what you ask for not just once in a while, but every time!
Jesus was bold about going to the cross. He was bold about being punished. He was bold about accepting your sin. So be bold if for no other reason than to honour Him.
If you need something from God today, don’t waste time standing around outside heaven’s gates. Through Jesus, you belong in the very throne room of God. So, come right on in. The door is always open for you.
2. Be Bold by Acting on the Word of God
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” –James 1:22 (NKJV)
Have you ever noticed that miracles most often occur among people who are bold about God? Boldness and the miraculous are so closely tied together that some people “try” to act bold just to get things to happen. Of course, it doesn’t work. Because true boldness comes from a knowing in your spirit, and boldness causes us to act on God’s Word like the bubbling up word that came out in my spirit in the above story about the car.
People sometimes mistake bold faith for pride. It isn’t an ego trip to believe in the favour of God, to believe in His supernatural protection, to believe in His provision. There’s a difference between ego and faith. When your standing in boldness on the Word of God—that’s faith talking. You aren’t bragging on yourself—you’re bragging on God! You just know what’s yours.
When you know (not hope) it is God’s will—to heal you, to pay your bills, to take care of your children—you won’t hesitate and you won’t be timid. You will reach out and TAKE those promises. You will take your faith and put it into action and do it boldly!
How do you get that way? By spending time in the Word and meditating on it until it becomes more real to you than anything else. That’s when boldness will rise up in you and you’ll start putting feet to your faith.
What does it look like to put your faith in action? If sickness is trying to come on your body, you don’t just believe for healing, you act on it. You speak to it and command it to leave in Jesus’ Name. If you haven’t been able to get out of bed, do something—anything—and start moving your feet toward the floor. If you’ve been in debt or lack and you’re believing to be free, put your faith in action. Pay even N1 or $1 on that debt in faith toward becoming debt free. You sow a seed of faith toward debt freedom. Whatever you do—do something!
One of the best ways for you to grow up and be strong and bold in faith is to begin laying hands on other people to be healed and delivered—to minister to them. There was a time in England when Jesse Duplantis was boldly ministering in the office of the prophet, and he cried out, “There’s somebody here who has a black scar right across your chest.” (You’ve got to be bold to speak out a specific word of knowledge). He said, “It bothers you, and God wants to take it away. Come up here and He’ll do it.”
Well, no one came. But Jesse wouldn’t give up, and he kept calling for this person. Finally, the man came forward. Now, boldness will cause you to do things you wouldn’t normally do. That’s when Jesse jerked the man’s shirt open and commanded that scar to be gone and it left—disappeared right then and there. Boldness is where the excitement is. The bolder you are, the more fun it is, and the more the power of God will manifest.
When we hesitate, and are afraid of what people might think, nothing happens. So, make up your mind now to be bold—whether you want to or not. You are exalting people’s opinions above God’s word. That is disrespectful and highest level of disobedience and disregard of God word, which is Him
That’s how it works, but you have to take the first step. Do what the Bible says to do— whether you feel like it or not. That’s called ACTING ON THE WORD! And that’s called FAITH!
3. Be Bold to Resist the Devil
“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” –James 4:7 (NIV)
How does the devil see you? Does he see you as a terrifying and mighty warrior of God…or does he see you as a wimp he can whip in a minute?
The answer to that question depends on you. If you study the children of Israel and their failure to enter the Promised Land, you will see the key to their failure is found in these words: “And we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:33, KJV).
When the car snatchers accosted me, I never exercised fear, not even with the gun shot. I preached to them with a gun behind my head.
The reason the Israelites were so terrified to fight the giants in Canaan wasn’t because those giants were so big. It was because the Israelites saw themselves as so small! It was what they were in their own sight that defeated them.
The same thing is true for you as a believer. It’s what you are in your own sight that will make the difference. If, in your own sight, you’re a weak, powerless Christian, the devil will run over you three or four times a day or more if he’s not busy. But when you begin to see yourself as God sees you, as a conquering son or daughter of Almighty God, equipped with the very power of God Himself, the devil will want to steer clear of you.
The devil would rather do anything than come against someone who’s bold and courageous, because he’s a coward himself. In fact, ever since Jesus came up out of that grave, Satan’s heart has melted within him at the sound of that Name in the mouth of one who has faith in it.
If you’re not strong in the Lord in your own sight, you need to change that. You need to get so full of God’s Word and so full of the Holy Ghost that you walk around like a spiritual giant. Turn the tables on the devil, and let him find out what it feels like to be a grasshopper for a change.
Jesus has already defeated the devil, and if you are a Christian, you have got authority over him. You have got the Name and blood of Jesus at your disposal, but you have to decide to be bold and take authority over your family, over sickness and disease, over the spirit of poverty, and anything else going on in your life.
You might be the quietest, sweetest person in the whole world, but when the devil comes, don’t be nice and quiet toward him. He is an outlaw, a killer and a thief. So, be bold in standing against him. Confront him and cast him out.
Be bold to walk into the darkness and bring the light. Be bold to reach into the jaws of hell and bring out your precious loved ones before they are lost forever. Be bold to face the angel of death and tell him: “No you don’t. Take your hand off and bow your knee to the Name of Jesus.”
Start practicing, and you’ll get bolder and bolder. Tell Satan he can’t come into your garden, he can’t come into your body, he can’t have your children, and he can’t have your money. Rebuke him and tell him to get out in the Name of Jesus. Put him in his place—and that place is out of your sight and out of your life.
In conclusion, when you are bold in approaching God, bold in acting on the Word of God, and bold about resisting the devil, you will be one who God describes as being bold as a lion. You don’t have to live in fear or timidity ever again. Now gird yourself up, get a spiritual roar going, and be bold as a lion!
By all means, get baptized in the Holy Ghost and Keep the fire burning! – This experience will fuel boldness and fearlessness like nothing else – Ask Peter, Paul, all those in the upper room, the early disciples you were massacred for their faith and never denied Christ!
Prayer of Salvation and Baptism in the Holy Spirit
Heavenly Father, I come to You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21). I am calling on You. I pray and ask Jesus to come into my heart and be Lord over my life according to Romans 10:9-10: “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” I do that now. I confess that Jesus is Lord, and I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead.
I am now reborn! I am a Christian—a child of Almighty God! I am saved! You also said in Your Word, “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: HOW MUCH MORE shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13). I’m also asking You to fill me with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, rise up within me as I praise God. I fully expect to speak with other tongues as You give me the utterance (Acts 2:4). In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
Begin to praise God for filling you with the Holy Spirit. Speak those words and syllables you receive—not in your own language, but the language given to you by the Holy Spirit. You have to use your own voice. God will not force you to speak. Don’t be concerned with how it sounds. It is a heavenly language!
Continue with the blessing God has given you and pray in the spirit every day. You are a born-again, Spirit-filled believer. You’ll never be the same!
— Father God, more than anything else, I want to know You. I want to spend time with You, share my life with You and be in constant fellowship with You. As I commit my time to You, I pray that you reveal Your presence and love to me each and every day. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
— Father, You are Love and You have put Your love in my heart. Help me to practice love today in all I do, and all I say, so that others may see You in me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
— Father, in the Name of Jesus, I make a fresh commitment to You to live in peace and harmony—not only with my brothers and sisters in the body of Christ, but with my friends, associates, neighbors and family. I let go of all bitterness, resentment, envying, strife, and unkindness in any form. I give no place to the devil. I forgive. Amen!
— Thank You, Father, for giving me prosperity in every area of my life. I commit to listening to Your voice and digging into Your Word. No matter what it looks like right now, I believe I have more than enough! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
— You are heir to THE BLESSING! Read Deuteronomy 28:1-14, inserting your own name in the scriptures, and declare the many blessings that are yours through Christ (Galatians 3:13-14).
— Father, I thank You that I am an heir to THE BLESSING! I choose life today. I choose to be a conduit for what You want to do in this world. Thank You for Your Word and the many blessings that are mine. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Now, Smith Wigglesworth battles to secure the real Baptism in the Holy Spirit despite visible anointed successes – The Bible Evidence of the Baptism of The Holy Spirit
There is much controversy today as regards the genuineness of this Pentecostal work, but there is nothing so convincing as the fact that over fifteen years ago a revival on Holy Ghost lines began and has never ceased. You will find that in every clime throughout the world God has poured out His Spirit in a remarkable way in a line parallel with the glorious revival that inaugurated the church of the first century. People, who could not understand what God was doing when He kept them concentrated in prayer, wondered as these days were being brought about by the Holy Ghost, and found themselves in exactly the same place and entering into an identical experience as the Apostles on the day of Pentecost.
Our Lord Jesus said to His disciples, “Behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high: (Luke 24:49). God promised through the prophet Joel, “I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh . . . Upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My Spirit.” As there is a widespread misconception concerning this receiving of the Holy Spirit, I believe the Lord would have us examine the Scriptures on this subject.
You know, beloved, it had to be something on the line of solid facts to move me. I was as certain as possible that I had received the Holy Ghost and was absolutely rigid in this conviction. When this Pentecostal outpouring began in England I went to Sunderland and met with the people who had assembled for the purpose of receiving the Holy Ghost. I was continually in those meetings causing disturbances until the people wished I had never come. They said that I was disturbing the whole conditions. But I was hungry and thirsty for God, and had gone to Sunderland because I heard that God was pouring out His Spirit in a new way. I heard that God had now visited His people, had manifested His power and that people were speaking in tongues as on the day of Pentecost.
When I got to this place I said, “I cannot understand this meeting. I have left a meeting in Bradford all on fire for God. The fire fell last night and we were all laid out under the power of God. I have come here for tongues, and I don’t hear them — I don’t hear anything.”
“Oh!” they said, “when you get baptized with the Holy Ghost you will speak in tongues.” “Oh, is that it?” said I, “when the presence of God came upon me, my tongue was loosened, and really I felt as I went in the open air to preach that I had a new tongue.” “Ah no,” they said, “that is not it.” “What is it, then?” I asked. They said, “When you get baptized in the Holy Ghost –” “I am baptized,” I interjected, “and there is no one here who can persuade me that I am not baptized.” So I was up against them and they were up against me.
I remember a man getting up and saying, “You know, brothers and sisters, I was here three weeks and then the Lord baptized me with the Holy Ghost and I began to speak with other tongues.” I said, “Let us hear it. That’s what I’m here for.” But he would not talk in tongues. I was doing what others are doing today, confusing the 12th of 1 Corinthians with the 2nd of Acts. These two chapters deal with different things, one with the gifts of the Spirit, and the other with the Baptism of the Spirit with the accompanying sign. I did not understand this and so I said to the man, “Let’s hear you speak in tongues.” But he could not. He had not received the “gift” of tongues, but the Baptism.
As the days passed I became more and more hungry. I had opposed the meetings so much, but the Lord was gracious, and I shall ever remember that last day — the day I was to leave. God was with me so much that last night. They were to have a meeting and I went, but I could not rest. I went to the Vicarage, and there in the library I said to Mrs. Boddy, “I cannot rest any longer, I must have these tongues.” She replied, “Brother Wigglesworth, it is not the tongues you need but the Baptism. If you will allow God to baptize you, the other will be all right.” “My dear sister, I know I am baptized,” I said. “You know that I have to leave here at 4 o’clock. Please lay hands on me that I may receive the tongues.”
She rose up and laid her hands on me and the fire fell. I said, “The fire’s falling.” Then came a persistent knock at the door, and she had to go out. That was the best thing that could have happened, for I was ALONE WITH GOD. Then He gave me a revelation. Oh, it was wonderful! He showed me an empty cross and Jesus glorified. I do thank God that the cross is empty, that Christ is no more on the cross. It was there that He bore the curse, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree.” He became sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him, and now, there He is in the glory. Then I saw that God had purified me. It seemed that God gave me a new vision, and I saw a perfect being within me with mouth open, saying, “Clean! Clean! Clean!” When I began to repeat it I found myself speaking in other tongues. The joy was so great that when I came to utter it my tongue failed, and I began to worship God in other tongues as the Spirit gave me utterance.
It was all as beautiful and peaceful as when Jesus said, “Peace, be still!” and the tranquility of that moment and the joy surpassed anything I had ever known up to that moment. But, Hallelujah! These days have grown with greater, mightier, more wonderful divine manifestations and power. That was but the beginning. You will never get an end to the Holy Ghost till you are landed in the glory — till you are right in the presence of God forever. And even then we shall ever be conscious of His presence.
What had I received? I had received the Bible evidence. This Bible evidence is wonderful to me. I knew I had received the very evidence of the Spirit’s incoming that the Apostles received on the day of Pentecost. I knew that everything I had had up to that time was in the nature of an anointing bringing me in line with God in preparation, but now I knew I had the Biblical Baptism in the Spirit. It had the backing of the Scriptures. You are always right when you have the backing of the Scriptures and you are never right if you have not a foundation for your testimony in the Word of God.
For many years I have thrown out a challenge to any person who can prove to me that he has the Baptism without speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance — to prove it by the Word that he has been baptized in the Holy Ghost without the Bible evidence, but so far no one has accepted the challenge. I only say this because so many were as I was; they have a rigid idea that they have received the Baptism without the Bible evidence. The Lord Jesus wants those who preach the Word to have the Word in evidence. Don’t be mislead by anything else. Have a Bible proof for all you have, and then you will be in a place where no man can move you.
I was so full of joy that I wired home to say that I had received the Holy Ghost. As soon as I got home, my boy came running up to me and said, “Father, have you received the Holy Ghost?” I said, “Yes, my boy.” He said, “Let’s hear you speak in tongues.” But I could not. Why? I had received the Baptism in the Spirit with the speaking in tongues as the Bible evidence according to Acts 2:4, and had not received the gift of Tongues according to 1 Corinthians 12. I had received the Giver of all gifts. At some time later when I was helping some souls to seek and receive the Baptism of the Spirit, God gave me the gift of Tongues so that I could speak at any time. I could speak, but will not — no never! I must allow the Holy Ghost to use the gift. It should be so, so that we shall have divine utterances only by the Spirit. I would be very sorry to use a gift, but the Giver has all power to use the whole nine gifts.
I want to take you to the Scriptures to prove my position. There are business men here, and they know that in cases of law, where there are two clear witnesses they could win a case before any judge in Australia. On the clear evidence of two witnesses any judge will give a verdict. What has God given us? Three clear witnesses on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit — more than are necessary in law courts.
The first is in Acts 2:4, “They were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Here we have the original pattern. And God gave to Peter an eternal word that couples this experience with the promise that went before. “This is that.” “And God wants you to have that- nothing less than that.” He wants you to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit according to this original Pentecostal pattern.
In Acts 10 we have another witness. Peter is in the house of Cornelius. Cornelius had had a vision of a holy angel and had sent for Peter. A person said to me one day, “You don’t admit that I am filled and baptized with the Holy Ghost. Why, I was ten days and ten nights on my back before the Lord and He was flooding my soul with joy.” I said, “Praise the Lord, sister, that was only the beginning. The disciples were tarrying that time, and they were still, and the mighty power of God fell upon them then and the Bible tells what happened when the power fell. And that is just what happened in the house of Cornelius. The Holy Ghost fell on all them, which heard the word. “And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.” What convinced these prejudiced Jews that the Holy Ghost had come? “For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.” There was no other way for them to know. This evidence could not be contradicted. It is the Bible evidence.
We have heard two witnesses, and that is sufficient to satisfy the world. But God goes one better. Let us look at Acts 19:6, “And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues and prophesied.” These Ephesians received the identical Bible evidence as the Apostles at the beginning and they prophesied in addition. Three times the Scriptures show us this evidence of the Baptism in the Spirit. I do not magnify tongues. No, by God’s grace, I magnify the Giver of tongues. And I magnify above all Him whom the Holy Ghost has come to reveal to us, the Lord Jesus Christ. He it is who sends the Holy Spirit and I magnify Him because he makes no difference between us and those at the beginning.
But what are tongues for? Look at the 2nd verse of 1 Corinthians 14 and you will see a very blessed truth. Oh, Hallelujah! Have you been there, beloved? I tell you, God wants to take you there. “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue, speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” It goes on to say, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself.”
Enter into the promises of God. It is your inheritance. You will do more in one year if you are really filled with the Holy Ghost than you could do in fifty years apart from Him.
Now, The Story of Archbishop Benson Andrew Idahosa, How his Baptism in the Holy Spirit transformed the ministry
Benson Andrew Idahosa was born in Benin (now Edo state) as an unhealthy child into a poor family. His health was so bad that his father instructed the Mother to throw him away. The mother did throw him away, but after a while she took him back. This caused a temporary separation between his parents. Later Idahosa struggled to be educated up to secondary school this was due to lack of finance. He was so poor that he could not afford a pair of shoes until he was eighteen years old.
In 1952, through a dramatic incident Idahosa became a Christian in an Assemblies of God Church in Benin. After his conversion he read the whole of John’s Gospel and decided he had to witness to his friends. This was the beginning of Idahosa’s preaching the Gospel. Idahosa later sought after the experience of Baptism in the Spirit and he asked the Pastor at the Assembly of God to pray for him. He was filled with the Spirit and spoke in tongues. After this experience Idahosa began to preach in the different villages organizing open air meetings. He did this in the evening while he worked for a shoe company (Bata) during the day. He was also an active and committed member of the Assembly of God Church where he was converted.
The open air meetings witnessed people being healed of epilepsy and many other sicknesses. Other miracles were also happening in these meetings. The news about the open air meetings started to spread to other villages and this led to more evangelistic activities. In order to reach more people with the Gospel he bought a motorcycle to help him travel to distant villages to conduct Gospel meetings.
In June 1967 Idahosa lost his father during the Civil War riots. A year later, during one night, his room was filled with God’s presence and he was awoken from sleep by a voice. It was the Lord speaking to him about his future mission; “I have called you that you might take the gospel around the world in my name, preach the gospel, and I will confirm my word with signs following.
After this experience he began to do more evangelistic meetings and outreaches. He would ask the Chiefs who head the villages for permission to conduct an evangelistic meeting in their village. They responded and more people were saved through his ministry. He directed the converts to existing Pentecostal Churches such as the Assemblies of God. Due to his evangelistic activities Idahosa soon became a leader under Pastor Okpo (the pastor at the Assemblies of God Church where he became a Christian) who gave him directions in ministry. However this did not last long as Idahosa decided to follow his own vision and establish a church. To this end Idahosa started a Bible study group in front of a store and within few years they outgrew the place bought a piece of land to build a bigger church facility. In order to build this new church building members of Idahosa’s church contributed a lot of money, time and labour.
Later Idahosa met one of the Apostolic Church missionaries, S.G. Elton and they became good friends. Elton became Idahosa’s mentor and it was him that introduced Idahosa to Gordon and Freda Lindsey (one of the healing evangelist of the Latter Rain Movement). Both Elton and Lindsey ordained Idahosa into ministry in 1971.
Idahosa was granted scholarship to study at Gordon Lindsey’s Bible College, Christ for the Nations Institute in Texas United States. Gordon Lindsey also helped Idahosa financially to build the new church. While Idahosa was studying for a Diploma in Divinity, he read T.L.Osbourne’s book on evangelism and he became very concerned about evangelizing Benin his home town. He later asked permission from Gordon Lindsey to go back to Nigeria. Permission was granted and he went back in 1972 not completing his Diploma in Divinity.
Idahosa, the elders of his church and Elton began to organize Gospel meetings in stadiums. The first was the one at Ogbe stadium in Benin which attracted 10,000 people. They publicise the meeting on radio stations, print posters and leaflets. This was a pioneering effort by Idahosa as it was American evangelists who usually do this sort of thing in those days. This type of gospel meetings (usually known as Gospel Crusades in Africa) became a defining feature of Idahosa’s ministry and would later attract hundreds of thousands of people. As Idahosa and his team did these Gospel Campaigns all over the country, converts were won and this eventually led to many church plants. This church planting concept was pioneering then as it was new to Nigerian Charismatics who were not sure whether to start founding churches.
Through his personal experience of poverty, the effects of the Civil War riots on Nigeria, the global recession that deflated Nigerian economy and the influence of American evangelists, Idahosa started to articulate Prosperity Gospel making him a pioneer in Nigeria and other African countries. In 1973 Idahosa claimed he received this message from God.
The world and its people are complaining daily of poverty and want. I have given you the mouth of miracles and blessings to my people. I have asked the cashiers of heaven to be on duty as long as you have a need for my own honour and glory. I shall supply all your needs according to my riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).
Begin to bless your people with all blessing; ask them to ask me anything they need, and I shall provide it for them. If only they will honour me with their wealth, I shall make them to be prosperous in all areas of their lives. I shall bless your partners and co-workers.
Wake up, go to the Church in the morning, and tell them poverty died last night. What you bless on earth is blessed in heaven. Bless my people, says the Lord, who came to give the good life of abundance.
Since then Idahosa has been preaching Prosperity with his life style and story. He dressed flamboyantly, used the best cars and pursued big projects with big budgets. It would however be wrong to conclude that he only used the money for his benefits, because he helped people financially, gave scholarships to the poor, fed people, gave cars and spoke on behalf of the voiceless to the Nigerian government on several occcasions. One of his sayings was, “it is better to live for posterity than for prosperity” This was why he built primary school, secondary school, a University and a hospital.
In 1981, he was ordained as the first Pentecostal Bishop in Nigeria by David Du plesis (known as Mr. Pentecost) and two other Bishops. Idahosa also pioneered a television ministry, ‘Redemption Hour’ which made him to become the first TV evangelist in Africa. His Bible College has trained the likes of Bishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams of Christ Action Faith Ministries, Bishop Charles Agyin-Asare of Word Miracle Church International, Bishop James Saah, Bishop Christianah Doe Tetteh of Solid Rock Chapel International and many others. Many of today’s Nigerian Pentecostal ministers can trace their roots directly or indirectly back to Idahosa’s ministry and influence. Men such as Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners Chapel, Bishop Francis Wale Oke of Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Bishop Mike Okonkwo (former president of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria), Ayo Oritsejafor, current president of CAN (Christian Association of Nigeria) and many more. Before his death in 1998, Idahosa had visited and preached in 125 countries including Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, Mexico, USA, Ghana, Cameroun, South African, Australia and Kenya. He will be remembered as an African apostle to the nations.
SHORT PRAYER FOR SELF-DELIVERANCE.
“Lord Jesus Christ, I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose again from the dead. You redeemed me by Your blood and I belong to You, and I want to live for You. I confess all my sins-known and unknown- I’m sorry for them all. I renounce them all. I forgive all others as I want You to forgive me. Forgive me now and cleanse me with Your blood. I thank You for the blood of Jesus Christ which cleanses me now from all sin. And I come to You now as my deliverer. You know my special needs-the thing that binds, that torments, that defiles; that evil spirit, that unclean spirit—I claim the promise of Your word, “Whosoever that calleth on the name of the Lord shall be delivered.” I call upon You now. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, deliver me and set me free. Satan, I renounce you and all your works. I lose myself from you, in the name of Jesus, and I command you to leave me right now in Jesus’ name. Amen!”
Let it come from your heart and see the salvation of the Lord!
