DAY 3 — The Empty Chair

366DaysDBS: The 366-Day Disciple-Making Journey
Nobody paid much attention to the chair until it was empty. Every Thursday evening, a small group gathered in a community center on the outskirts of Nairobi. They came from different backgrounds and different stages of life. Some were students. Some were business owners. Others were retirees with more stories than years left to tell. Together, they prayed, studied Scripture, shared meals, and encouraged one another. Among them was an elderly man named Joseph. Joseph never led the meetings. He was not the most knowledgeable person in the room, nor was he the loudest. He simply showed up. Week after week, month after month, he arrived early, greeted everyone warmly, listened carefully, and quietly encouraged those around him. He always sat in the same chair. Near the window. Third row from the back. Over time, that chair became part of the room itself. Then one week, it was empty. At first, nobody thought much of it. People assumed he was delayed or perhaps attending to something personal. The meeting continued as normal. Yet throughout the evening, several people found themselves glancing toward the familiar spot near the window. The chair remained empty. After the gathering ended, someone finally asked:
“Has anyone heard from Joseph?”
The room grew unusually quiet. Everyone knew Joseph. Or at least, they thought they did. But as questions began circulating, an uncomfortable truth surfaced. Nobody knew where he lived. Nobody knew whether he had family nearby. Nobody knew how to contact him. For months, they had shared the same room without truly sharing life. The following morning, a few members began making inquiries. Eventually, they discovered that Joseph had suffered a minor stroke several days earlier. He was recovering alone in a small apartment across the city. The news shook the group. For so long, Joseph had been the one encouraging everyone else. He had celebrated their victories, listened to their struggles, and faithfully prayed for their needs. Yet when his own crisis arrived, few even knew it had happened. What followed changed the group forever. People organized meal deliveries. Others arranged transportation to medical appointments. Some visited regularly just to talk and pray. Younger members helped with shopping and household chores. What had once been a weekly gathering slowly transformed into something much deeper. A family. Several months later, Joseph returned. As he walked into the room, everyone stood and applauded. After the meeting, he slowly made his way to the chair by the window and placed a hand on its backrest. With tears in his eyes, he shared something nobody ever forgot.
“I spent years thinking I was simply attending a meeting,” he said. “But when I became unable to show up, God showed me I belonged to a family.”
The room fell silent. Everyone understood. The empty chair had revealed something they had overlooked. It is possible to know faces without knowing people. It is possible to attend gatherings without building relationships. It is possible to study God’s Word without carrying one another’s burdens. Jesus never called His followers to become an audience. He called them to become a family. And families notice when someone is missing. As people left that evening, one question lingered in every heart:
If your chair were empty tomorrow, who would notice? And whose empty chair have you failed to notice?
