If Part 1 revealed the Promise of the Father and Part 2 showed us the benefits of praying in tongues and living a Spirit-filled life, then Part 3 takes us deeper into the practical realities of walking daily with the Holy Spirit. This is where speaking in tongues moves from being merely a doctrine to becoming a lifestyle. This is where the Holy Spirit stops being a theological concept and becomes the active Helper, Comforter, Teacher, Strengthener, Guide, and Companion Jesus promised He would be. Curry Blake repeatedly emphasizes a truth that transformed both his own life and the life of John G. Lake:
The Holy Spirit did not come merely to visit believers. He came to dwell within them and flow through them. The Christian life was never designed to be lived through human effort alone. God’s original plan has always been that His people would live from the inside out. The Spirit within becomes the source of strength, wisdom, peace, revelation, boldness, endurance, and power.
THE LANGUAGE OF HEAVEN
One of the fascinating discussions in this section concerns the nature of speaking in tongues. Curry Blake recounts scientific observations in which individuals from various religious backgrounds were monitored while praying or meditating. Researchers noted that people praying in tongues displayed unusual activity patterns that differed from normal speech functions. According to the reports, the language being spoken demonstrated characteristics of sophisticated language systems with structure, syntax, and patterns, yet the normal speech centers did not appear to be operating in the same way they would during ordinary conversation. 0 Whether one focuses on the scientific implications or not, the spiritual principle remains powerful. Speaking in tongues does not originate in the intellect. It originates in the spirit. This is one reason many believers struggle initially. The mind wants control. The spirit wants surrender. The flesh wants understanding. Faith trusts God before understanding arrives. Praying in tongues is learning to trust the Holy Spirit beyond the limits of natural reasoning.JOHN G. LAKE — LETTING GOD DO THE TALKING
One of the most remarkable testimonies shared concerns John G. Lake. Lake reportedly underwent scientific testing where he spoke normally, recited poetry, prayed in English, and then prayed in tongues. Observers reportedly noted extraordinary activity during his prayer in tongues. When asked about it, Lake simply replied:“I just let God do the talking.” 1That statement summarizes the essence of praying in the Spirit. Many believers feel inadequate because they do not know what to pray. Yet the Holy Spirit always knows. Many believers struggle because they cannot find the right words. The Holy Spirit never lacks words. Many believers worry they will pray incorrectly. The Holy Spirit never prays incorrectly. Praying in tongues is learning to trust God’s wisdom above our own.
THE INVITATION MANY BELIEVERS HAVE MISSED
One thing becomes clear throughout this section. Many Christians love Jesus. Many have been saved for years. Many faithfully attend church. Many serve in ministry. Yet many have never personally received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Curry pauses to address these believers directly. God is not reluctant. The Father is not withholding His Spirit. Jesus already settled that question. Luke 11:13 says:“How much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?” 2Notice the simplicity.
- Ask.
- Believe.
- Receive.
- Thank Him.
- Yield.
RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT
If you have never received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, this promise belongs to you. Not because you deserve it. Not because you have earned it. Not because you reached a certain level of spirituality. It belongs to you because Jesus purchased it. The first requirement is salvation. The world cannot receive Him. But every child of God can receive Him. 3 The second step is faith. Ask. Receive. Believe. Then begin worshipping God. Do not strain. Do not imitate. Do not manufacture sounds. Do not fear making mistakes. The Holy Spirit gives the utterance. You do the speaking. The same way you speak English by faith and choice, you speak in tongues by faith and yielding.PRAYER TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
Father, I thank You that I belong to Jesus Christ. I thank You that Your Word promises the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Today I ask. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I receive Your gift by faith. I thank You that You are faithful. I yield my voice. I yield my tongue. I yield my heart. I yield my life. Let rivers of living water flow from me. I receive Your Spirit now. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen. 4
THIS IS THE REST
One of the dominant themes throughout this section is rest. Not physical rest. Spiritual rest. Many believers live exhausted. They are weary. They are discouraged. They are emotionally depleted. Not because God abandoned them. But because they have forgotten how to draw strength from Him. Isaiah declared:“This is the rest.” “This is the refreshing.” 5Curry connects this directly to praying in tongues. The Spirit refreshes. The Spirit renews. The Spirit strengthens. The Spirit restores. Many believers try to survive spiritual warfare through determination. God provides supernatural refreshing.
WHY PEOPLE GIVE UP TOO SOON
Curry points out that many believers quit just before breakthrough. The battle becomes prolonged. The pressure intensifies. The circumstances appear unchanged. Discouragement grows. Weariness settles in. The enemy understands this. Many victories are lost not because faith failed but because endurance failed. Paul wrote:“Let us not be weary in well doing.” 6The Spirit-filled believer has access to continual renewal. Praying in tongues refreshes the spirit and helps believers remain strong during extended battles.
PEACE IS A PERSON
Jesus said:“Peace I leave with you.” “My peace I give unto you.” 7Curry explains that this peace is inseparably connected to the Holy Spirit. The Comforter reminds us of everything Jesus has said. Peace comes from knowing. Knowing God is faithful. Knowing God is present. Knowing God has not abandoned us. Knowing God will keep His Word. Peace is not the absence of conflict. Peace is confidence in the presence of God during conflict.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT FAR AWAY
John G. Lake repeatedly emphasized the reality of the indwelling Spirit. Many believers behave as though God is far away. They spend their lives trying to persuade Him to arrive. Lake taught something radically different. God is already present. The Holy Spirit already lives within the believer. The issue is not getting Him to come. The issue is learning to cooperate with Him. 8 This changes everything.- Prayer changes.
- Healing changes.
- Ministry changes.
- Confidence changes.
- Life changes.
THE DAY PENTECOST CHANGED EVERYTHING
Acts chapter 2 remains one of the greatest moments in Church history. The believers were filled with the Holy Spirit. They spoke in tongues. People from many nations heard them declaring the wonderful works of God in their own languages. 9 What had been scattered at Babel was momentarily reversed. Languages that once divided humanity became instruments through which God glorified Himself. The miracle was not merely speaking. The miracle was hearing. Each listener heard in his own language. Each listener understood. Each listener encountered God.THE MISSIONARIES OF THE ONE-WAY TICKET
One of the most inspiring stories from this section concerns the earliest Pentecostal missionaries. When Agnes Ozman received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in 1901, many early Pentecostals believed the language they received indicated where God was sending them. 10 These believers became known as:Missionaries of the One-Way Ticket. They left home expecting never to return. They had no mission boards. No guaranteed support. No safety nets. Only obedience. Only faith. Only the Holy Spirit. Many died on the mission field. Many never saw home again. Yet they carried the Gospel across nations. What a challenge to modern Christianity.
WHEN GOD SPEAKS HUMAN LANGUAGES
This section includes several remarkable testimonies. John G. Lake reportedly preached to Italian workers in their own language despite never naturally learning Italian. 11 Smith Wigglesworth reportedly ministered in languages he had never studied. 12 A Japanese Buddhist woman reportedly heard a Pentecostal woman praying in classical Japanese and heard an invitation from Jesus Christ Himself. 13 Curry also recounts his own experience in Africa when he suddenly understood a conversation in Swahili and discovered plans to rob him. 14 These testimonies all point to the same reality:The Holy Spirit knows what we do not know.
THE DYNAMO OF THE SPIRIT
John G. Lake referred to praying in tongues as:“The dynamo of the Spirit.” 15Just as a generator produces electricity and charges batteries, praying in the Spirit continually builds spiritual strength. Most believers wait until crisis arrives before seeking power. Lake taught believers to remain charged. Remain ready. Remain prepared. Remain spiritually strong. The Holy Spirit has already been placed within us. The issue is learning how to cooperate with Him daily.
BUILDING YOURSELF UP
Jude gives one of the clearest instructions in Scripture:“Building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” 16You build yourself up. You stir up the gift. You cooperate. You engage. You participate. This is active partnership with God. This is not passive Christianity. This is Spirit-filled Christianity.
