Matthew 4:1-2
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
We have chosen 40 days for this activity since the number 40 in the Bible represents a time of testing out of which something significant happens. There were 40 days of rain at the time of Noah. Moses was 40 days with God when he received the 10 commandments. The people of Israel were 40 years in the desert. Jesus was tempted by Satan for 40 days. A pregnancy is 40 weeks long out of which a new life is born. 40 days, almost 6 weeks, is the length of Lent, traditionally used for reflection and preparation for Easter. It will be long enough to stretch you but short enough that you can focus on this without feeling you are promising to do something you can’t complete. Pray and ask Jesus for an ever deeper desire to learn from Him over these 40 days. And don’t worry about ‘getting it all’ on the first try. We offer a second series that reviews what we cover here with additional challenges.
For Reflection:
- What is the biggest obstacle you face that affects your learning about God?
Make Life Count:
- Spend a minute thanking God for everything that has happened to bring you to where you are today.
