Day 11 of 40 day Discipleship walk with Jesus Christ: Spend seven minutes with God

Psalm 1:3

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

One way to engage the Scriptures is a pattern called 7 minutes with God. You do 5 things which you can number on the fingers of one hand.

  1. Pray and ask God to open your heart to learn from the word. We ask the Holy Spirit to teach us.
  2. Read the passage from the chapter. If we are just starting out, it should be something that is good for beginners like the book of John.
  3. Read it again slowly, savoring the words and Chew on them. Think about any questions provided with the reading.
  4. Pick a thought or phrase that stands out which you can focus on throughout the day. To help remember, record ideas in the comment section for that verse or bookmark the verse as a favorite. Think especially how you can respond in some ways in your daily activities.
  5. Pray and ask God to use it in your day and walk with others.

These are like training wheels to help you meet with God as you read the Scriptures. Later you can be much less structured and try different patterns.

For Reflection:

  • How important is it to daily commune with God?
  • What is the best time of day to make it happen?

Make Life Count:

  1. Start the Seven Minutes with God in one of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke or (Feel free to read elsewhere, but this is a good starting point if you are looking for a suggestion.)

A story for you to ponder over:

The sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground as Mira knelt by the stream. She dipped her fingers into the cool water, splashing her face. “You know, Sam, I’ve always felt like this place has magic,” she mused.
Sam leaned against a gnarled oak, arms crossed. “Magic? Or just a good place to hide from reality?”
“Maybe both,” she chuckled, watching the water dance around stones. “But look at that tree! It’s thriving, even in the drought. It’s like it’s got a secret.”
“Or maybe it’s just deep-rooted,” he replied, squinting at the branches swaying gently. “Like the way you’re stuck here.”
Mira’s smile faltered. “I’m not stuck. I’m… growing.”
“Like that tree?” he teased, but there was concern in his eyes.
“Exactly!” she exclaimed, determination sparking. “It’s like the verse says—‘planted by streams of water.’ I want to yield my fruit, not wither away.”
Sam sighed, stepping closer. “Then why stay? You could go anywhere.”
“Because,” she said, her voice firm, “whatever I do here matters. I’ll prosper.”
As she stood, sunlight broke through the clouds, illuminating the vibrant leaves above, and for the first time, Sam believed it too.
