Day 10 of 40 Day walk with Jesus Christ: Get off the bottle!

1 Corinthians 3:2

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

If bottle feeding went on permanently throughout a person’s life, it would be very odd. Imagine a group of 60 year olds drinking milk from baby bottles? Normally babies, around 6 months of age, learn to eat solid foods little by little. They start with soft stuff. It is messy. They squish it with their fingers and rub it on their hair. Food gets all over the place. But they eventually learn to feed themselves.

We need to do the same in discipleship. You may start with the short verses, which is all you need. Later you will want to read the whole chapter where it is from or to understand what that book of the Bible says. At some point you will want to read through the whole Bible. This is a natural part of the growing process. You can select the passage reference and access the whole chapter to read the verse in context. Try it when you feel a need for more and experiment with what works the best.

For Reflection:

  • Do you think you should be eating solid food from the Scriptures? (It is perfectly fine to realize you are not ready for that yet.)
  • How have you experienced feeding yourself in the Scriptures?

Make Life Count:

  • Ask God for His plan to learn the Scriptures considering where you are right now

A story to drum home the point:

The sun dipped low, casting long shadows in the cluttered apartment as Mark cradled a baby bottle filled with warm milk. He stared at it, an odd mix of nostalgia and defiance swirling within him.
“Why do you even have that?” Sarah’s voice cut through the silence, her arms crossed, disbelief etched across her face.
“Because… I miss simpler times,” he mumbled, bringing the bottle to his lips. The familiar sweetness flooded his senses, yet it felt heavy, a weight of his own making.
“Mark, this isn’t a time to reminisce. You’re thirty, for crying out loud!” She threw her hands up, frustration boiling over. “This isn’t normal!”
“Normal? What’s normal anymore?” he shot back, the milk spilling slightly down his chin. “Everyone expects me to have it all together, but I just want to escape.”
“Escape?” she laughed bitterly, shaking her head. “This isn’t an escape. It’s a retreat, a refusal to grow up.”
As he drained the last drop, Mark realized the truth in her words. The comfort he sought was a prison, and the bottle clattered to the floor. It shattered, a crisp sound echoing through the room.
“Okay,” he whispered, breathless. “I need to grow up.” The decision hung in the air, heavy yet liberating.
