4 Spiritual Laws For Effective Witnessing

The four spiritual laws - gospel

The Four Spiritual Laws – Welcome To The Four Spiritual Laws is a gospel tract written by Dr. Bill Bright (Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ).

It’s the most significant piece of Christian literature (other than the Bible itself) ever created with over 2.5 billion copies in print. It is amazing how a piece of literature can revolutionize our approach to evangelism. See an example from Engineer Joey Carlos

The Four Spiritual Laws booklet and techniques listed here on how to use it are designed to enable Christians to be more effective in their witness for Christ. We do not claim that this particular presentation is the only way to introduce others to Christ, nor even the best way. It should be remembered that it is the Holy Spirit who draws individuals to Christ by using men, methods and materials to communicate His truths. Millions of men and women in most countries of the world have prayed to receive Christ through the direct, simple presentation of the gospel contained in this booklet. Approximately one billion copies have been distributed in all of the major languages of the world.

Why Witness?

  1. It brings glory to God — John 15:8.
  2. The Lord commands us to witness — Matthew 4:19; John 15:16.
  3. Men are lost without Christ — 1 John 5:11,12.
  4. Men are receptive to the gospel in most countries. Hundreds of thousands of surveys taken throughout the world indicate that an average of one out of two to one out of four, depending on the country, will receive Christ the first time they hear the good news of God’s love and forgiveness — Colossians 1:6; 1 Thessalonians 1:5.
  5. The love of Christ constrains us — 2 Corinthians 5:14. This love is expressed not by the emotions, but by the will. One should never wait for an emotional impression to share one’s faith in Christ.

    1. Recognizing the advantages of the Four Spiritual Laws presentation.

Realize that the Four Spiritual Laws represent the basic truths of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These Four Laws contain the Word of God, which He has promised will never return void.

      1. Realize that as those who have prayed to receive Christ have learned how to live in the power of the Holy Spirit and to present the good news of God’s love and forgiveness in Christ shown in the Four Spiritual Laws, many thousands have become consistently fruitful in their witness for our Savior.
      2. Realize the benefits of using the Four Spiritual Laws presentation.
        1. It can be used to open the conversation. You can simply say, “Have you heard of the Four Spiritual Laws?”
        2. It begins with a positive note: “God loves you.”
        3. It presents the claims of Christ clearly.
        4. It includes an invitation to receive Christ.
        5. It offers suggestions for growth.
        6. It emphasizes the importance of the church.
        7. It gives you confidence because you know what are going to say and how you are going to say it.
        8. It enables you to stay on the subject — to control the conversation.
        9. It makes it possible for you to be brief.
        10. It enables you to be prepared.
    1. Introducing the Four Spiritual Laws Booklet.

Following are several statements that have been used effectively in introducing the Four Spiritual Laws:

        1. “Have you heard of the Four Spiritual Laws?”
        2. “Would you help me by giving me your opinion of the Four Spiritual Laws?”
        3. When you believe someone may be a Christian but are not really sure, you could say, “I have been a Christian for years but I have just recently found a way to express my faith that really makes sense. I would like to share it with you. Have you heard of the Four Spiritual Laws?”
    1. Presenting the Four Spiritual Laws.
      1. Breathe spiritually. Exhale the impure (confess your sin, 1 John 1:9) and inhale the pure (surrender the control of your life to Christ, Ephesians 5:18, and appropriate the fullness of the Holy Spirit by faith, 1 John 5:14,15.
      2. Be sensitive to an individual’s interest and the leading of the Holy Spirit. The simplest way to explain the Four Spiritual Laws is to read the booklet aloud. However, be careful not to allow the presentation to become mechanical. Remember, you are not just sharing principles — you are introducing the person to Christ. The Four Spiritual Laws are simply a tool to help you effectively communicate the gospel. Pray for God’s love to be expressed through you.
      3. When questions arise that would change the subject, explain that most questions are answered as you go through the Four Spiritual Laws. Or say, “That’s a good question. Let’s talk about it after we have completed reading the Four Spiritual Laws.”
      4. Be sensitive to the individual. If there seems to be no response, stop and ask, “Is this making sense?”
      5. Hold the booklet so that it can be seen clearly. Use a pen to focus on key points. This will help hold attention.
      6. In a group, give each person a Four Spiritual Laws booklet. Pray with those who are interested in receiving Christ. If only one is interested, be sensitive and in most cases talk with him privately.
      7. If someone has already heard the Four Spiritual Laws, ask him what he thought of the booklet and if he has any questions. If he is interested and the gospel is not clear, go over the Four Spiritual Laws again.
      8. When a person does not receive Christ during your first time together, assure him of your availability of further counsel.
        1. Make another appointment if he is interested.
        2. Pray for him. Occasionally ask him if he has thought further about your discussion or if he has any questions.
    2. Encouraging a person to pray to receive Christ.
    1. After presenting the Four Spiritual Laws, you will want to encourage the one with whom you have shared the “good news” to receive Christ. Do not hesitate to provide a specific opportunity to do so. Many times one who has previously appeared to be rather indifferent will want to pray when he is confronted with the definite opportunity to ask Jesus Christ to be Savior and Lord of his life.
    1. Therefore:

    1. After presenting Law Four, be sure to ask the questions.
    2. Explain how one can receive Christ through prayer.
    3. Read the prayer aloud.
    4. Ask, “Does this prayer express the desire of your heart?”
    5. Say, “If it does, you may wish to pray this prayer right now, and Christ will come into your life, as he promised.” (Pause at this time for prayer. Make sure that people with whom you are sharing can see the prayer to read it.)
    6. If the person hesitates to pray aloud, ask, “Would you like to repeat the prayer after me as I read it?”
    7. Pray
    8. If the person wishes to pray silently, you may suggest that he close his prayer with an audible “Amen” so that you know when to begin your prayer.
    9. If the person is not yet ready to pray, simply tell him that one day you believe he will want to receive Christ and you would like him to know how to do so. Then ask if he understands how to receive Christ.
  1. Assuring a person that Christ is in his life.
    1. Ask the questions.
    2. Explain the importance of not depending upon feelings.
    3. Explain the train diagram.
    4. Explain that, in the moment that he, as an act of faith, received Christ, many things happened.
    5. Arrange to meet again as soon as possible, within not more than 48 hours . If personal follow-through is impossible, make sure you establish continuing follow-through by mail.
    6. Emphasize the importance of the church and Christian fellowship.
