12 But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name—
13 Who owe their birth neither to bloods nor to the will of the flesh [that of physical impulse] nor to the will of man [that of a natural father], but to God. [They are born of God!]

Over the past 10 years or so we have seen several high-profile celebrity pastors of very large churches fall in ministry. They have either been removed, resigned or simply retired. – The sad reality is that they all left a trail of wounded victims along the way. While we don’t expect our leaders to be perfect, we do expect them to be above reproach. From studying the lives of these three prominent high-profile pastors, I’ve come up with a list of qualities that most of them had in common that led to their demise. The sad part is that there are many more pastors who will undoubtedly follow in their footsteps UNLESS they make some serious changes. Here is my list.

Allen brought out six points that are wreaking havoc in the lives of leaders as it did in the life of Saul.
Here are the highlights
1) Pride –
1 Samuel 15:12,17
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 12
When Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, he was told, Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up for himself a monument or trophy [of his victory] and passed on and went down to Gilgal.
1 Samuel 15:17
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 17
Samuel said, When you were small in your own sight, were you not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed you king over Israel?
2) Unequivocal allegiance leading toxic spiritual abuse – Cultist behavior in the churches
1 Samuel 19:18-20
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 18
So David fled and escaped and came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth. 19 And it was told Saul, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah. 20 And Saul sent messengers to take David; and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul and they also prophesied.1 Samuel 18:3-4Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own life. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, even his sword, his bow, and his girdle.
1 Samuel 20:30
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 30
Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan and he said to him, You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do not I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother who bore you?
3) Insecurity – Leading to a need to maintain control
1 Samuel 18:6-9
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 6
As they were coming home, when David returned from killing the Philistine, the women came out of all the Israelite towns, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul with timbrels, songs of joy, and instruments of music. 7 And the women responded as they laughed and frolicked, saying, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. 8 And Saul was very angry, for the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed only thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom? 9 And Saul [jealously] eyed David from that day forward.
4) Irrational Behavior – Sign the leaders need help
1 Samuel 18:10-12,17
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 10
The next day an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved [madly] in his house, while David played [the lyre] with his hand, as at other times; and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand. 11 And Saul cast the javelin, for he thought, I will pin David to the wall. And David evaded him twice. 12 Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.17 Saul said to David, My elder daughter Merab I will give you as wife; only serve me courageously and fight the Lord’s battles. For Saul thought, Let not my hand, but the Philistines’ hand, be upon him.
5) Outburst of Anger – Humiliating people publicly and privately, it means that leader needs serious help
1 Samuel 22:16-18
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 16
[Saul] said, You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house. 17 And the king said to the guard that stood about him, Turn and slay the Lord’s priests, because their hand also is with David and because they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hands against the Lord’s priests.18 The king said to Doeg, You turn and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned and attacked the priests and slew that day eighty-five persons who wore the priest’s linen ephod.
6) Lack of Accountability – In three scenarios such as they do not have true accountability or they have accountability with people who cosign their decisions with no one challenging them or they have accountability but ignore it.
Read 1 Samuel 13 and 1 Samuel 15 where Saul had Samuel and Saul rejected all of Samuels instructions to correct.
COMMENTS From 17 of those who have watched this video:
1) My husband and I had to make a difficult decision to leave the church we went to for 14 years, because so many things happened all at once. Since then it’s been 3 years and we’ve had a few other things we’ve experienced from Christian “leaders.” I think if we were not rooted & grounded in our walk with Christ, we would probably have completely walked away from church. Thank God we have now found a church. I really wish we would all stop putting Christian leaders on a pedestal. I had to learn the hard way.
2) “Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself, less.” That’s a great way to put it!
3) I’ve gone through this 3 times personally & watched it happen from the outside in many other churches. It is so heartbreaking. The pain from the emotional abuse that I went through many years ago is still there, sometimes feeling like it happened yesterday. I saw these signs, but was not mature enough to know that what they were saying & how they were treating me was not acceptable. I figured that since they were older & “wiser” spiritually, that they must be right & I was falling short. I am glad I finally left those churches.
4)I was expecting an epic takedown of fallen pastors, but the route you took makes the message more broadly applicable!
5)I’m glad you made this video. One thing that I’m learning is that alot of these leaders have narcissistic tendencies which can be masked as someone who is very strong willed & assertive. I unfortunately have witnessed the things you listed & it’s a sad sight. Church hurt is real but thankfully that didn’t damper my faith!
6)I love the fact that you didn’t dwell on the “3 men”, but dealt with the issue. This is true Church edification. God bless you
7)At my church we had two major life changing events. Some people were concerned about what would happen to the church. I replied “It all depends”. Depends on what? they asked. “On whether it was the pastor’s church or God’s church”.
8)When I was a new believer I went to a Bible study in Florida led by Patrick Morley from Man in the Mirror. He shared this, “Even if you’re right, you’re wrong if you’re not humble.” I’ve been quoting this for 20 years and I pray daily for this in my ministry. Thanks for the video! Great stuff!
9)This message helped me. I was ambushed, stonewalled, shunned, rejected by by a pastor and his crew. My life is moving on our God is good!
10)Man, this video hit hard! When I came home from the Army I took over the youth ministry of my home church – the church I grew up in – at the same time, the new pastor that came in just after I got back, manifested each and everyone of these traits, especially number 2. I cannot begin to describe how broken hearted I was to see how toxic my spiritual home had become.
11) Feedback from a Pastor – As someone who use to exhault myself for the gift that God had given me. He took me all the way from the stage to a regular member of a church. It happened so fast and it was a very painful experience. As a father, God disciplines us. Discipline is very harsh sometimes but it’s for our good. So, downfall in my experience is the first sign of God’s Discipline. Let us of coz seek to help these leaders and pray for them. One thing we have in common is that we are humans, praising someone for their good works might lead to them exhaulting themselves the way I did. Once again, God is our father and he deals with us.
12) I am a Pastor myself and I really enjoy most of your videos! Thank you! Ones like this help me see myself in the light of God’s Word and see other Leaders/Pastors in the same manner. I was Pastor in a small church where point 2 was, in retrospect, the characteristic of the deacon/power player of the church. He was a large giver in the church and let everyone know and a bit of a charismatic personality whereas my own personality is much blander! 🙂 I would not preach his pet doctrine of hyper-dispensationalism and therefore he went to work to gather and garner support to oust me. He succeeded but didn’t anticipate another deacon standing up to him and his followers and exposing him. This was my first church out of seminary, so I was a bit bamboozled on this whole thing myself, but now, later I can see his toxic behavior, especially after watching your video. Thank you.
13) You have me questioning my character I was expecting some serious tea to be spilled on current fallen pastors and here u are taking the high road to show us biblical examples that applies to everyone not just pastors. Great job!
14) Unfortunately my church went through a split a few years ago. The person who caused it wanted our senior pastors position. They showed most of these points you referred to. It was a sad time but God is faithful & He is growing our church again. We have a wonderful pastor & we really didn’t like how he was being treated. It’s all good now…even better!
15) Thank you very much for the video, Pastor Allen. Incidentally, my church is currently going through 1 Samuel in a series of sermons and Bible studies, and we definitely saw most if not all of the traits you’ve highlighted in King Saul. Even so, I appreciate the sobering reminders as well as that final encouraging message about St Peter.I pray that God continues to bless and work through your ministry here, so that Christians who partake of it will be enabled to glorify Him with their lives, no matter how hard it gets.Thank you again and God be with you, brother.
16) Many years ago, I suffered this exact some spiritual abuse from an insecure pastor. All six points applied. It really left me and my family hurting for a very long time. But, we never lost in our faith in God, but we went through a lot of painful grief and left the ministry.
17) Thank you so much Allen for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. This is a side effect of pride but I believe pastors start believing their own hype. Many people are going to mega churches to be entertained instead of learning more about a relationship with Christ. Sin feeds off of sin. The congregants feed the pastor’s ego, the pastor feeds the congregants baby food about how God wants them to be prosperous and happy and comfortable.
