This week, we are exploring 6 Ways for better Work-life Balance to avoid Burnout and Spur Healthy Motivation for All-Round Success including some biblical truth and examples.

Work–life balance is a term commonly used to describe the balance that a working individual needs between time allocated for work and other aspects of life. Areas of life other than work–life can include personal interests, family and social or leisure activities.

Another definition says:

Work–life balance is the lack of opposition between work and other life roles. It is the state of equilibrium in which demands of personal life, professional life, and family life are equal.

A whopping 94% of working professionals reported working more than 50 hours per week and nearly half said they worked more than 65 hours per week in a Harvard Business School survey. Experts agree: the compounding stress from the never-ending workday is damaging. It can hurt relationships, health and overall happiness.

Some of us are under intense pressure from all sides – Pressures from work, pressures from the neighborhood and pressures families such as money, kids need for time, school hassles, societal demands, church demands – the list never ends…We find ourselves submerged and drowned in the daily merry go round life struggles that the term work-life balance loses its meaning to us.

The impact is far reaching than we can imagine – It affects everything including motivation, health, joy, adequate sleep, productivity at home and in the workplace… the list goes on.

The fact of the matter is that we cannot play God and we need to draw a line or else we begin to dig an early, untimely grave that God did not design for us. Even God rested on the seventh day as we learn from the Holy book of all-time wisdom in

Genesis 2:2-3 New King James Version (NKJV)

And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

Matthew 11:28-30 The Message (MSG)

28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

If God rested from all His work and Jesus emphasized rest in our work with Him, so must we because we are wired like Him.

The quickest indicator for a faulty work-life balance is Burnout

What is burnout?

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands

What are the indicators?

The indicators for burnout are manifold and the knowledge of the signs makes an early diagnosis possible and allows to take countermeasures.

Burnout: Symptoms and Causes

When people are complaining about chronic fatigue or lack of energy for many months or years, classical medical exams often do not show any relevant findings. Even when more physical complaints keep developing, like heart pain, headaches, dizziness, problems with concentration and memory or sexual problems, there still is no cause to be found on the physical level. Therefore, the burnout syndrome is classified as a psychological type of disease.

The problematic nature is more encompassing, if you keep in mind that there cannot be a physically manifest disease that does not involve the so-called psyche (call it “soul”). The realization that nothing drops out of the sky and that everything that is has been developing, gives credence to the fact that everything has to develop from the subtle to the gross.

If “burnout” means to be burned out, than that means that there has to have been a huge fire. Such a “fire” generates stress in any case.

Indicators of Burnout: This is how the Burnout Syndrome Develops

In the beginning phase most persons affected show a marked engagement for grand goals, for instance professionally. They are doing what they can to be indispensable. To the contrary, in order to be even better the addiction keeps increasingly occupying the private life and thus the necessary recuperative periods.

These people are characterized by the feeling of never having time. The evening before they are already planning the next day in detail, and then they take this thought stress into the night. The result is that such people can no longer sleep in a rhythmic fashion and are therefore tired and exhausted in the morning. Symptoms of Insomnia begins. Their own demands for the coming work day need to be met, so the flame is still burning as well as it is able to. The energy expenditure keeps increasing, though, so that during the second stage of development there is an inevitable reduction in their professional commitment. The flame, the energy level, grows weaker.

In this phase the people are loosing a great deal of their positive feelings towards colleagues, employees, clients. Now feelings of not getting enough recognition or even being exploited are spreading. The wheel of ruin keeps picking up speed.

The existential fear that is felt, like for instance of loosing the job, is being joined by conflicts in the partnership or family. Over time that leads to the further development of reduced self-confidence, guilt feelings and the feeling that nothing can be changed and helplessness.

Before the flame expires there is a last flare-up, which can express as impatience, aggression, mistrust, irritability and moodiness. Memory and concentration decrease, and now there is an inability to make decisions.

Furthermore, other indications of burnout emerge: The body’s immune system becomes weaker. As previously mentioned these people are reporting a multitude of complaints, which do not show any causal findings during the medical examination. The symptoms keep repeating more often and more intensely, in spite of pharmaceutical treatment, which has been used for this multitude of complaints.

During the next stage – we see an “infarct of the soul”. The people have arrived, the fire is gone, everything becomes dark and quite often they fall into the most severe depression.

I sense that as we pray for people’s challenges, we also need to back this up with sound counselling. We need to get wisdom and with all our getting, we need to get understanding so that we can go further, faster with less effort or less casualties

Next week, we shall be looking at Insomnia and how to prevent this in our experience so that we can be fully alert and motivated to do exploits in the marketplace.

  1. Control Perfectionism, don’t allow Perfectionism to control you

A lot of overachievers develop perfectionist tendencies at a young age when demands on their time are limited to school, hobbies and maybe an after-school job. It’s easier to maintain that perfectionist habit as a kid, but as you grow up, life gets more complicated. As you climb the ladder at work and as your family grows, your responsibilities mushroom. Perfectionism becomes out of reach, and if that habit is left unchecked, it can become destructive.

  • Disconnect

From telecommuting to programs that make work easier, technology has helped our lives in many ways. But it has also created expectations of constant accessibility. The work day never seems to end. “There are times when you should just shut your phone off and enjoy the moment. As my wife will always say, if you die from overwork from constant availability and taking on everything, there will be others to do what you do and even better.

  • Exercise and meditate

Even when we’re busy, we make time for the crucial things in life. We eat. We go to the bathroom. We sleep. And yet one of our most crucial needs – exercise – is often the first thing to go when our calendars fill up. Exercise is an effective stress reducer. It pumps feel-good endorphins through your body. It helps lift your mood and can even serve a one-two punch by also putting you in a meditative state.

  •  Limit time-wasting activities and people

First, identify what’s most important in your life. This list will differ for everyone, so make sure it truly reflects your priorities, not someone else’s. Next, draw firm boundaries so you can devote quality time to these high-priority people and activities.

From there, it will be easier to determine what needs to be trimmed from the schedule. If email or internet surfing sends you into a time-wasting spiral, establish rules to keep you on task. That may mean turning off email notifications and replying in batches during limited times each day.

  • Change the structure of your entire life

Sometimes we fall into a rut and assume our habits are set in stone. Take a birds-eye view of your life and ask yourself: What changes could make life easier? So instead of trying to do it all, focus on activities you specialize in and value most. Delegate or outsource everything else. Delegating can be a win-win situation.  We have God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit…All are one but have different functions read John 16:7

But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

  • Start small. Grow from there.

We’ve all been there: crash diets that fizzle out, New Year’s resolutions we forget by February. It’s the same with work-life balance when we take on too much too quickly. Some of our workaholic friends commit to drastic changes: cutting their hours from 80 hours a week to 40, bumping up their daily run from zero miles Kilometers or miles a day to five kilometers a day. It’s a recipe for failure.

“If you’re trying to change a certain script in your life, start small and experience some success. Build from there”

Jesus Christ started with 12 disciples, then 72 disciples and before He left, 120 disciples. from there at Pentecost, it exploded to 5000 disciples.

Questions for discussion, reflection and application:

  1. What have you learned today on work-life balance today?
  2. What changes will you make and when?
  3. Who would you share this information with that you know needs it and when will you share?

In conclusion,

I leave you with these same as last week…

You are made of Your Spirit (The real You we can’t touch), Your Soul (Your thinking Faculty or The Emotional Engine of Your Being) and Your Body (The Physical you we see and touch). All of these You in one person need all round fitness for all round success to take place. Balance is a necessity in all three spheres.

May the God who created all things make you perfect in all three spheres of your being in Jesus name.
