Short Story – The Gentle Whisper
As I sat in my small, cluttered apartment, surrounded by the familiar sounds of the city, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. It was as if the very fabric of reality had been altered, and I was the only one who knew.
I had been feeling this way for weeks, ever since the earthquake had struck. It had been a powerful and destructive force, leaving behind a trail of devastation and chaos. But as the days passed, I began to notice something strange. The world around me was not just rebuilding, but transforming. The once-familiar streets were now lined with strange, glowing plants, and the sky was filled with a soft, pulsing light.
At first, I thought it was just my imagination, but as the days passed, I realized that the world was truly changing. And I was the only one who could hear the gentle whisper that seemed to be drawing me towards something.
I tried to ignore it, to go about my daily routine and pretend that everything was normal. But the whisper only grew louder, more insistent. It was as if the universe itself was calling out to me, urging me to listen.
Finally, I could no longer resist. I pulled my cloak over my face and went out into the streets, searching for the source of the whisper. I walked for hours, my heart pounding in my chest, until I came to a small cave on the outskirts of the city.
As I entered the cave, I felt a strange sensation, as if I was being pulled into another world. And then, I heard the voice. It was soft and gentle, but it filled the cave with its presence.
“What are you doing here, Elijah?” it asked.
I pulled my cloak off my face and looked around, but there was no one there. The voice was coming from within me, from the depths of my own soul.
“I heard a gentle whisper drawing me here,” I replied, my voice shaking with fear and wonder.
“And what did you find?” the voice asked.
I thought for a moment, trying to put into words the strange, transformative power that I had felt in the cave.
“I found a new world,” I said finally. “A world that is being reborn, even now.”
The voice laughed, a soft, joyful sound.
“You have seen the truth, Elijah,” it said. “The world is always changing, always transforming. And those who listen to the gentle whisper will find the power to shape that change.”
I left the cave that day with a sense of purpose, knowing that I had been called to a great and wondrous adventure. And as I walked back through the city, I felt the whisper growing louder, more insistent, urging me to continue on my journey.

Let read
1 Kings 19:12-13
After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
How have you perceived the presence of God this week? The prophet Elijah was very discouraged and he needed to hear from God. The Scriptures said that an earthquake and fire and mighty wind passed by but Elijah could not hear God in those things. Then there was a still, small voice that Elijah heard God speaking to him. God asked him, ‘What was he doing there?’ And Elijah explained himself and received fresh instructions. Isn’t it amazing that God asks us questions to help us think and to help us to be open to new ideas? Sometimes as we read, it is only a whisper, a nudge, a new thought or question. Sometimes it is connecting an earlier thought to a new idea. Sometimes it is by writing something down or explaining your thought to another person that helps you understand what God is saying.
For Reflection:
- Has God spoken to you through wind, earthquake, fire or a small voice?
- What other word would you use to describe how Jesus speaks to you?
Make Life Count:
- Write a short email to one of your encouragers and tell him/her someway you have perceived God’s presence this week.
Shalom!
