James 1:22
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Practice doing something with what you learn. Experience helps cement the truth and gives great satisfaction to the learning. This seems obvious but the more we can actively use what we are learning, the more encouraging and real it will become. We are to be doers of the Word and not just hearers. We don’t earn favor by putting truth into practice but we gain the benefit of seeing the truth function according to its intended purposes. While our experience may be incomplete practice steps, it serves to get us moving in the right direction. If we combine this practice with reflection, bringing the experience back to the Scriptures, it is truly transformative. Learning becomes a journey that is purposeful and satisfying.
*The story for reflection and application :*
In the small town of Ayangba in Kogi state, nestled in the heart of the countryside, there lived a man named James. James was a kind and gentle soul, always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need. He worked as a carpenter, crafting beautiful furniture and homes for the townspeople, and was well-respected for his integrity and dedication to his craft.
One day, as James was working in his shop, a stranger arrived in town. The stranger was a tall, imposing figure with piercing eyes and a stern expression. He introduced himself as a traveling preacher, and began to spread his message throughout the town.
At first, James was skeptical of the preacher’s words. He had always believed that good deeds and actions were more important than any religious beliefs or dogma. But as he listened to the preacher’s teachings, he began to see the world in a different light. The preacher spoke of the importance of listening to the word of God, and putting it into action in our lives.
James was moved by the preacher’s words, and began to attend his sermons regularly. He found comfort in the teachings, and felt a sense of purpose and meaning that he had never experienced before. He began to see the world as a place of beauty and wonder, filled with people who were all deserving of love and respect.
But not everyone in the town was convinced by the preacher’s message. Some saw him as a charlatan, and mocked his beliefs as foolishness. They scoffed at James for his faith, and told him that he was wasting his time on empty promises.
Despite the ridicule and criticism, James continued to attend the preacher’s sermons, and to live by the teachings of the Bible. He found strength and comfort in his faith, and began to see the world in a new light. He helped those in need, and treated everyone with kindness and respect.
As the months passed, the town of Ayangba began to change. The preacher’s message of love and compassion had taken root, and the people began to see the world in a new light. They began to treat each other with kindness and respect, and the town became a place of peace and harmony.
And James, the carpenter, was at the center of it all. He had listened to the preacher’s words, and had put them into action in his life. He had become a leader in the town, and his faith had brought hope and light to all who knew him.
The story of James and the preacher’s message spread throughout the region, and soon, people were coming from far and wide to hear the preacher’s teachings. The town of Ayangba had become a beacon of hope and faith, and James was at the heart of it all.
Years passed, and James grew old and grey, but he never forgot the lessons he had learned from the preacher. He continued to live by the teachings of the Bible, and to share the message of love and compassion with all who would listen. And the town of Ayangba remained a place of peace and harmony, a testament to the power of faith and the importance of putting the word of God into action in our lives.
