Last week in series 10 of 52, we explored 7 Indisputable, Blockbuster Relationship Connections for All-Round Success in Your Life.

We emphasized the fact that we are hard-wired for relationship connection. No one is an island and how we handle our relationships with God, At Home, in small groups, in the church, in the neighborhood in our business affect our motivation and all round success in life.

This week, we are exploring the need to focus on goals high above the skies for deep-rooted all-round success.

In a goal-obsessed world, everyone strives to achieve something great.

And we often assume that we will be happy as soon as we get that job, get a raise or promotion, earn a certain income, go on vacation, buy a house, get married, have a baby, move to a better city and a whole nine-meter-long earthbound goals. We pin our hopes for happiness on a shifting array of targets that keep changing.

This mindset is a psychological thought trap many high-achievers are familiar with. The truth is, the moment of achievement, although glorious, is only fleeting.

When all of your hard work is focused on a particular goal, what is left to push you forward after you achieve it?

You say things like, “I thought if I secure this order that then I’ll be happy,”, “And I secured it, and I was happy. And then the same stress and pressure and emptiness returned.”

Arrival fallacy is the false belief that reaching a valued destination can sustain happiness.”

Arrival fallacy is this illusion that once we make it, once we attain our goal or reach our destination, we will reach lasting happiness… How wrong we are..

Arriving at a destination rarely makes us happy as we expect. There is a deep-rooted happiness that is called joy that comes from reaching for goals far above the skies beyond the numbers, the things and the achievement that the world can deliver in the rate race that puts us in the never-ending circles of activity upon activity.

This joy is not dependent on success or failure. It lingers beyond the activity… beyond achieving the goals..

Apostle Paul pens down in Colossians 3: 1-4 The Message (MSG)

1-2 So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.

3-4 Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ.

A second version says Colossians 3:1-4 Good News Translation (GNT)

3 You have been raised to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven, where Christ sits on his throne at the right side of God. Keep your minds fixed on things there, not on things here on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Your real life is Christ and when he appears, then you too will appear with him and share his glory!

Jesus goes on to talk about our riches in heaven in Matthew 6:19-21

19 “Do not store up riches for yourselves here on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and robbers break in and steal. 20 Instead, store up riches for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and robbers cannot break in and steal. 21 For your heart will always be where your riches are.

Your joy, my joy, our joy cannot be taken away when we build up treasures in heaven.

Now let us discover …

7 Treasures that we can get by focusing on goals high above the skies!

  1. A love for the Word of God

Psalm 119:11, Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Proverbs 7:1, My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. Psalm 119:162,  I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

  1. A desire to follow Jesus

Matthew 19:21,  Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

  1. Develop an intimate relationship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Colossians 2:1-3,That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

1 John 1:3-4, That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

  1. Seek after the kingdom of God

Matthew 6:31-33, 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Are you a God-chaser? Do you pursue Him?

  1. Strive to live a life that is holy and blameless, without spot or wrinkle

2 Peter 3:13-15, 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

  1. Run after the high calling of God

Philippians 3:10-16, 12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.  14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

  1. Be rich in good works

1 Timothy 6:17-19, 17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Questions for discussion, reflection, application and distribution to others who need it:

  1. What have you learned today on the 7 treasures mentioned above?
  2. What changes will you make and when?
  3. Who would you share this information with that you know needs it and when will you share?

In conclusion,

Matthew 6:33 The Message (MSG)

30-33 “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Shalom!
