Day 13 of 40 Day Discipleship Walk with Jesus Christ: Look for the unexpected

Short story:

Mia stood, her heart pounding. “I can’t believe I’m doing this,” she muttered, gripping the crumpled flyer in her hand. It advertised a local community service event. “What would they think of me?” “Hey, you okay?” a voice broke through her thoughts. It was Jake, a familiar face from her past. He was the last person she wanted to see. “I’m fine,” she snapped, but her voice trembled. “Just… thinking.” “Thinking about what? That you’re not good enough?” he laughed, but it lacked its usual bite. Mia took a deep breath, the weight of her old self creeping back. “Maybe I am.” “Then you haven’t heard the good news. You’re a new creation now, Mia. The past doesn’t define you.” His eyes locked onto hers, earnest and unwavering. She felt a spark ignite within her. “You really think so?” “Absolutely,” he said, stepping closer. “I’ve seen the changes. You’ve got this.” Mia smiled for the first time in days, the old fears melting away. “Okay, I’ll do it. I’ll join the event.” Jake grinned. “Now, that’s the spirit. Let’s show everyone what the new you can do.” The alley felt brighter, and for the first time, Mia believed it.

Day 13 of 40 Day Discipleship Walk with Jesus Christ: Look for the unexpected

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Look around for something unexpected: a new opportunity, a new desire, a new ability, a new connection, a new possibility, a new understanding or a new relationship. The old is gone! He is making all things new. What does that look like? What new patterns do you see? What are you doing with these patterns?

Something may still look the same, but perhaps you can understand it in a new way? Life is difficult and sometimes downright painful. Where is God doing something new inside of the old? How can you pray differently? Are thoughts from your Scripture reading, giving you new understanding in these situations? What might be invisible to the human eye, that you suspect that God is doing? How do we find out about that? Who can you discuss this with?

For Reflection:

  • In what way does God make things new?
  • Why might it be difficult to recognize the new?

Make Life Count:

  • Open the Bible and look at the index. Check off the books you have read or circle a few that you would like to Keep this in mind when you need to choose the next book of the Bible you will read.
