Matthew 5:14-16
The Passion Translation
14 “Your lives light up the world. Let others see your light from a distance, for how can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop?[a] 15 And who would light a lamp and then hide it in an obscure place?[b] Instead, it’s placed where everyone in the house can benefit from its light. 16 So don’t hide your light![c] Let it shine brightly before others, so that the commendable things you do will shine as light upon them, and then they will give their praise to your Father in heaven.”
As I present this introduction to Enough is Enough to Captivity of Satan and Welcome to Freedom in Christ – Beaming the light of God in this Perverse World + Baptism in the Holy Ghost + 2 Stories, I would like us to note, remember and deploy (Stir Up) these seven critical A, B, C, D, E , F and G attributes in ourselves for us to be successful in beaming the light of Christ to the world that lies under the influence and control of the evil one. Freedom in Christ can only be expressed in the fruits around our lives. These seven attributes are critically important as ingredients to help us be all that we need to be and to do. They are:
1- A: Availability
2- B: Boldness
3- C: Compassion
4- D: Determination
5- E: Earnest Love
6-F: Fiery Anger
7-G: Great Hunger
We need to prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to help us stir these attributes in various degrees in ourselves as opportunities present themselves or we create the opportunities by the Holy Spirit promptings.
The biggest mistake we can make when we are presented or confronted with daunting situations and circumstance in our world is to begin to second guess the gifts and abilities God has deposited in each one of us to beam Him out to our dark world. What we don’t want to do is to bury the gifts and do nothing. We can all be sure that God will call us to account for how we have deployed the treasure within us for His glory.
In considering the scripture above, The questions that might arise are? What is this light? How does that translate to my God-ordained gift and what exactly should I do to make this light within me known and expressed in a dark world for God’s glory?
The place to start is to look at Jesus because it is Jesus who is the light of the world. We are to beam Him out to others in our world. Let’s look at Luke 4:18,19 in Jesus’s vision and mission statement because His mission and vision statement is our mission and vision statement by extension:
Luke 4:18-21
The Passion Translation
18–19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, and he has anointed me to be hope[a] for the poor, freedom for the brokenhearted, and new eyes[b] for the blind, and to preach to prisoners,[c] ‘You are set free!’ I have come to share the message of Jubilee,[d] for the time of God’s great acceptance[e] has begun.”[f]
20 After he read this he rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the minister, and sat down. Everyone stared at Jesus, wondering what he was about to say. 21 Then he added, “These Scriptures came true today in front of you.”
Jesus, in ensuring that people are not left in doubt about this mission and vision, He did exactly what that prophecy said about Him and accomplished it. You read the account in:
Matthew 4:23-25
The Passion Translation
Jesus’ Ministry of Healing
23 Jesus ministered from place to place throughout all of the province of Galilee. He taught[a] in the synagogues, preaching the hope of the kingdom realm[b] and healing every kind of sickness and disease among the people. 24 His fame spread everywhere![c] Many people who were in pain and suffering with every kind of illness were brought to Jesus for their healing—epileptics,[d] paralytics, and those tormented by demonic powers were all set free. Everyone who was brought to Jesus was healed!
25 This resulted in massive crowds of people following him, including people from Galilee, Jerusalem, the land of Judah, the region of the Ten Cities known as the Decapolis, and beyond the Jordan River.[e]
And after training the disciples for 3 years, He set them loose to deploy this mission and vision statement. We can see a snapshot of that in
Acts 5:12-16
The Passion Translation
The Apostles Perform Miracles, Signs, and Wonders
12 The apostles performed many signs, wonders, and miracles among the people. 13 And the believers were wonderfully united as they met regularly in the temple courts in the area known as Solomon’s Porch. No one dared harm them,[a] for everyone held them in high regard.
14 Continually more and more people believed in the Lord[b] and were added to their number—great crowds of both men and women. 15 In fact, when people knew Peter was going to walk by, they carried the sick out to the streets and laid them down on cots and mats, knowing the incredible power emanating from him would overshadow them and heal them.[c] 16 Great numbers of people swarmed into Jerusalem from the nearby villages. They brought with them the sick and those troubled by demons—and everyone was healed!
So, what made these ordinary men become supermen of a supernatural God? What can help you with the ABCDEFG attributes we discussed above earlier. The answer lies in Jesus’ last statement in
Acts 1:3-8
The Passion Translation
3 After the sufferings of his cross, Jesus appeared alive many times[a] to these same apostles over a forty-day period.[b] Jesus proved to them with many convincing signs that he had been resurrected.[c]
During these encounters, he taught them the truths of God’s kingdom realm 4 and shared meals with them.[d] Jesus instructed them, “Don’t leave Jerusalem, but wait here until you receive the gift I told you about, the gift the Father has promised. 5 For John baptized you in water, but in a few days from now, you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit!”[e]
6 Every time they were gathered together, they asked Jesus, “Lord, is it the time now for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”
7 He answered, “The Father is the one who sets the fixed dates and the times of their fulfillment. You are not permitted to know the timing of all that he has prepared by his own authority. 8 But I promise you this—the Holy Spirit will come upon you and you will be filled with power.[f] And you will be my messengers[g] to Jerusalem, throughout Judea, the distant provinces[h]—even to the remotest places on earth!”[i]
John highlighted the fact that the devil calls the shots in our world and re-emphasized the assignment for which Jesus came into the world to execute in 1 John 5:19 and 1 John 3:8 and I read:
1 John 5:19
The Passion Translation
19 We know that we are God’s children and that the whole world lies under the misery and influence of the Evil One.
And 1 John 3:8
The Passion Translation
8 But the one who indulges in a sinful life is of the devil,[a] because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was revealed was to undo and destroy the works of the devil.
Jesus stated in Matthew 12:29 – “No one can break into a strong man’s house and take away his belongings unless he first ties up the strong man; then he can plunder his house.
We cannot take the city by our own strength but by the power of the Holy Spirit:
Hear John the Baptist in Luke 3:16
The Passion Translation
16 But John made it clear by telling them, “There is one coming who is mightier than I. He is supreme.[a] In fact, I’m not worthy of even being his slave.[b] I can only baptize you in this river, but he will baptize you into the Spirit of holiness and into his raging fire.[c]
The Holy Spirit is the helper that will help us in advancing the kingdom in a dark world by beaming the light of Christ after taking down the stronghold of the enemy, satan. How we get equipped is through Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an empowering experience, equipping Spirit-filled believers for witness and ministry where we can easily express the 7 attributes above with so much ease.
You can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit by praying this prayer so that out of your belly will flow rivers of living water that refreshes you and empowers you for service of beaming His light to the world despite strong opposition:
Let us pray:
O Lord, make me a vessel of your power, in the name of Jesus
Let heavens open and let your glory, God, fall upon me , in the name of Jesus.
O God baptize my eyes, ears and mouth to receive, hear and speak wondrous things
I receive fresh fire and fresh anointing, in the name of Jesus.
Let the fire of God consume every works of Darkness in my life
Let the spirit of God purify my intellect, will and emotions, in Jesus Name
Let the spirit of God purify my soul, spirit and body, in Jesus Name
Baptize me with the Holy Ghost and fire according to your promise in Luke 3:16.
Lord, let there be a fresh pouring of Your Spirit upon the Body of Christ worldwide Father in the name of Jesus I want all that you have for me.
I want the fullness of the Holy Spirit with all the gifting of the Spirit working in my life. So I humble myself before you now and I ask you according to your word, baptize me in the Holy Spirit now. I surrender myself to flow in the gifts that the Holy Spirit will exhibit or beam through me.
May the anointing, the glory, and the power of God come upon me and into my life right now.
May I be empowered for service from this day forward with all the seven attributes identified above – Availability, Boldness, Compassion, Determination and Earnest Love. fiery and great hunger
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for baptizing me in Your Holy Spirit. Amen.”
I surrender my tongue so the Holy Spirit can give me utterance so He can speak through me. I receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit by faith, it is mine and I now have it
Now just begin to praise God and let the words that come up inside you flow out of your mouth. You have to do the speaking the Holy Spirit will give you the words.
You can do all of this at home, in the car, office, anywhere you are led or have a nudge to pray.
To substantiate our exhortation, hereunder are two true stories with the application of the 7 attributes we learned today.
We are all called to preach the gospel and demonstrate God’s presence by healing the sick. We are all equipped to do the basics not everybody has a primary assignment or an office in this area of ministering healing and deliverances.
Our primary assignment might be administration, supercharged by the Holy Spirit. We might be in a prime minister’s position in government and we can change the destiny of a nation towards righteousness by enacting laws that favour Gods cause. Some might be doctors in the hospital ministering healing to the sick through divine inspiration and medicine
We present these two stories today and I encourage you to look out for the 7 attributes above in these stories:
One from Trevor, a thirteen-year-old that took the bold step in addressing the ills in society for the homeless and the second story is about the confrontation between a woman whose son was to be executed on an electric chair and last minutes’ prayer of the evangelist averted the execution:
Story 1: Trevor’s story in beaming the love of Christ to a careless and unloving world.
A true story, about a boy named Trevor. It shows there are little things kids can do that make a big difference. One night Trevor was doing what a lot of other 13-year-old kids would be doing: He was watching TV. On the news he saw a story about some homeless people sleeping out in the cold on the streets, in a downtown area of Philadelphia where he lived. Trevor had never really stopped to think how fortunate he was to live in a fairly well-to-do suburb of the same city. The story of the homeless people touched his heart and he began to wonder what he could do to help these people. It might have been easy for Trevor to forget about it. There are so many sad stories that you see on TV at times. This could have been just another that he ignored. Trevor also might have thought, Well, what can I do about it? I’m just a kid, but he didn’t. Instead he began to wonder how he might help and that led him to remember there were some spare, unused blankets in their garage. So he went to his father and asked if he could take them to the people downtown who had no homes to go to for the night.
Trevor’s father might have thought the request a bit strange. It is easy for us to want to hang on to the things that we have, easy for adults to think that they’ve worked hard to get what they own, so why should they give it away? I guess it is much the same as a kid thinking, It took a long time to save up my pocket money to help buy this new bike, so why should I lend it to a friend who needs to get home in a hurry?
Now, Trevor’s dad was a kind-hearted guy. He drove Trevor downtown to hand out their few surplus blankets to some of the people on the streets. I guess when it came time to curl up and sleep that night the people were pretty happy for the added warmth of the new blankets.
Trevor was happy, too. He felt good about giving out the blankets. He felt an inner warmth, almost like he had been wrapped up in an emotional blanket himself. But he realized there was a risk— it might feel so good that you’d want to do it again.
The next day Trevor went to his local grocery store and other public places in his neighborhood where there were notice boards. He put up signs asking for people to donate any spare blankets or food they didn’t need. The result was surprising. Kindness was contagious. Trevor found so many people were willing to help that within a week he had filled his dad’s garage with food and blankets. What Trevor had started with his kindness grew and spread throughout the community. It wasn’t long before people’s generosity overflowed from his dad’s garage and Trevor and his dad had to look for a bigger building to house all the gifts being donated. Would you believe there are now a number of special warehouses throughout Philadelphia that stock food and blankets to feed and warm the homeless? They are all called “Trevor’s Place.”
Application of story 1 for consideration in our claim:
‘Could it be that God could be calling somebody to address the Almajari issue in Nigeria by providing boarding, feeding and Christian centric education to raise a righteous generation in our land? If we don’t, the devil will hijack them for his purpose of killing, stealing and destroying. We can talk all we want but our assignment is to beam the light and love of Christ despite all and that will open them up to want to listen to what we have to say about this our Jesus. Read Matthew 25:1-46
Story 2: Man’s Life Spared from Electric Chair – Story told by the daughter of the pastor – The power of intercessory prayer in beaming the light of Christ to an unjust world.
He was preaching in Newark, New Jersey, in 1960. The time: 9:30 p.m. A woman came walking down the center aisle, and my father, R. W. Schambach, knew what that meant. It meant someone was going to interrupt his message. She walked down the center aisle and stood right in front of the preacher that night. He had his Bible in hand and was preaching a masterpiece! How dare anybody to interrupt a man of God?
Actually, that precious woman was interrupting him with the desperate kind of faith, just as four men tore the roof off the place where Jesus was teaching so their friend could get a miracle. Their faith moved the Lord, and that’s what real faith does.
When that woman in Newark approached my father, she said, “Brother Schambach, please forgive me. I have never stopped a preacher in my lifetime. But this is an emergency. My son is going to die in the electric chair at ten o’clock.”
By his own confession Brother Schambach thought, “Oh, my God!” She knocked the preach right out of him. When he heard that, he couldn’t preach another word.
He had prayed for people dying in hospitals, but he had never prayed for anybody who was going to die in the electric chair. This man had been convicted by a jury of his peers. He had been found guilty. He was going to die in order to pay for the murder they said he committed—and it was going to happen in thirty minutes. Brother Schambach couldn’t preach! He shut the book. He couldn’t even pray! He asked everybody in the church to stand.
People had often asked my father, “Do I need the Holy Ghost?” When we encounter needs like this woman presented, a person doesn’t have any idea how to pray. This is why we all need the fullness of the Holy Spirit!
The Holy Ghost began to pray through my father. He said it felt like somebody put a robe on him—it was the robe of the anointing for miracles, and he could feel the anointing. A double portion rested upon him as he prayed in tongues. Then, as he put it, he started to eavesdrop on the Holy Spirit by praying in English. When he began to pray in English, what he was saying shocked him:
“Lord, in the name of Jesus, convict the real killer through the Holy Ghost. Make him confess to the crime.”
Inside, my father was kicking himself. He thought, Shut up, dummy. The man has already been convicted. He was asking God to get hold of the real killer. He didn’t know, but the Holy Spirit knew this woman’s son hadn’t committed the crime. The Holy Spirit was praying through my father saying, “Get hold of the real killer and make him confess.”
After Dad finished praying, he looked at the woman and said, “Go home, go to bed—and sleep! Your son will not die in the electric chair!” Again he chastised himself, thinking, Shut up, you dumb preacher! Remember, you have to come back here tomorrow night and preach!
Sometimes the Holy Spirit will say things that are difficult for you to believe. Sometimes when you are preaching, you say things that startle you. But it isn’t you talking, it is the Holy Spirit.
Are you ready for the outcome of this story?
Dad returned to his hotel and went to bed. He got up the next morning and went to the diner a block away. On his way in, he bought the New York Daily News. Glory! Did you ever shout looking at a newspaper? Well, he did. You know what the headlines said? “Man’s Life Spared from Electric Chair—Story on page 3.” He didn’t eat breakfast. Oh, no. He sat down on that curb and tore open the paper to page three. Dad remembered what that newspaper said verbatim. He could tell you the name of the district attorney. His name was Mr. Hogan. The story read, “Last night at 9:40, Mr. Hogan received a phone call from a man.” (Remember, it was 9:30 when the woman disturbed the service. At 9:40, God answered the woman’s prayer. Oh, hallelujah!) The man on the other end said, “You are burning the wrong man.”
“What do you mean? Who is this?” asked Mr. Hogan.
“Never mind who it is. But you have a man scheduled to die in the electric chair for the murder of a man in the upper Bronx. You found his body in a second-floor apartment, face down with stab wounds.”
Mr. Hogan said, “How do you know this?”
He said, “I’m the one who committed the crime.”
“Where are you?” Mr. Hogan asked.
He answered, “I am two blocks from a certain precinct. And I am on my way in to give myself up.”
Mr. Hogan stopped the execution. He went to the precinct and interrogated the new suspect until three o’clock in the morning, going over the same question. “Why did you give yourself up?”
Repeatedly the same answer came, “Man, I never had any intentions of giving myself up. But when I called you last night, something got a hold of me and made me confess.”
I hope you have come up with the 7 attributes in the above stories?
Go and do likewise in the circle God has called you into. Follow your heart!
May the Lord expand your life until your gifts beam light to a darkened world in Jesus name, Amen
