In Christian counseling, you need to have down to earth sympathy and ruthless openness to the counselee as this ensures the flow of Gods kind of love to the counselee and you will be in a position to be a channeled by God wherein He – God can minister life to their situation and circumstances. But, sympathy and openness do not fall from the sky on a counselor.

So, how does God do this? He does this through the circumstances and situations He orchestrates by His sovereign will that brings about the needed training required amidst myriads of other ways. You cannot possibly deeply sympathize with someone if you have not gotten off your high horse to the level and position of the person you are ministering to.

God births ministry in our lives through our pains. So, don’t hide it, don’t cover it up because you don’t know how powerful that connection is to ensure speedy healing of the person you are counseling. These experiences are the glue that holds the skill we have acquired through personal or group study or a Christian counseling school together. There are a number of scriptural examples for us to look at starting from God Himself.

In the book of Genesis, almighty God told Abraham about His intention to destroy Sodom but that before He destroys it, He needed to go among them to find if really what is hearing is true. We know how an angel almost got molested by the Homosexuals in that city. From that moment, the destiny of that city was sealed. Read the account in

Genesis 18:16-22 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)16 The men rose up from there and faced toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

17 And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham [ My friend and servant] what I am going to do,

18 Since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him and shall bless themselves by him?

19 For I have known (chosen, acknowledged) him [as My own ], so that he may teach and command his children and the sons of his house after him to keep the way of the Lord and to do what is just and righteous, so that the Lord may bring Abraham what He has promised him.

20 And the Lord said, Because the shriek [of the sins ] of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is exceedingly grievous,

21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether [as vilely and wickedly ] as is the cry of it which has come to Me; and if not, I will know.

22 Now the [two ] men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord.

I bypass the intercession of Abraham for that city for next time. But let’s see what happened to the angel in Sodom.

Genesis 19:1-15 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

19 It was evening when the two angels came to Sodom. Lot was sitting at Sodom’s [city ] gate. Seeing them, Lot rose up to meet them and bowed to the ground.

And he said, My lords, turn aside, I beg of you, into your servant’s house and spend the night and bathe your feet. Then you can arise early and go on your way. But they said, No, we will spend the night in the square.

[Lot ] entreated and urged them greatly until they yielded and [with him ] entered his house. And he made them a dinner [with drinking ] and had unleavened bread which he baked, and they ate.

But before they lay down, the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, all the men from every quarter, surrounded the house.

And they called to Lot and said, Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know (be intimate with) them.

And Lot went out of the door to the men and shut the door after him

And said, I beg of you, my brothers, do not behave so wickedly.

Look now, I have two daughters who are virgins; let me, I beg of you, bring them out to you, and you can do as you please with them. But only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.

But they said, Stand back! And they said, This fellow came in to live here temporarily, and now he presumes to be [our ] judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them. So they rushed at and pressed violently against Lot and came close to breaking down the door.

10 But the men [the angels ] reached out and pulled Lot into the house to them and shut the door after him.

11 And they struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness [ which dazzled them], from the youths to the old men, so that they wearied themselves [groping ] to find the door.

12 And the [two ] men asked Lot, Have you any others here—sons-in-law or your sons or your daughters? Whomever you have in the city, bring them out of this place,

13 For we will spoil and destroy [Sodom ]; for the outcry and shriek against its people has grown great before the Lord, and He has sent us to destroy it.

14 And Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, Up, get out of this place, for the Lord will spoil and destroy this city! But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be [only ] joking.

15 When morning came, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, Arise, take your wife and two daughters who are here [and be off ], lest you [too ] be consumed and swept away in the iniquity and punishment of the city.

We can see from the above text that when this affront to the angels by the people of the city was taking place, the destiny of that city was sealed.

In our world today, we have turned God’s house into a place where children are molested – where the continuous raping of the sheep (children, women, men, and everybody in-between) takes place daily. Do we expect God to just relax and look upon our wickedness without a corresponding response? I don’t think so!

We are told in the bible that Jesus had to come down from His high horse to deliver mankind. He had to come to mingle with the created to really understand, to get the first hand experience to with created so that His deliverance will be total and from an informed position. When He came, we are told He had compassion for them for they were like sheep without a shepherd. Read this account in

Matthew 9:36 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)36 When He saw the throngs, He was moved with pity and sympathy for them, because they were bewildered (harassed and distressed and dejected and helpless), like sheep without a shepherd.

Does that mean Jesus did not have pity on humans while He was with His Father? Absolutely not. There is something that it does to you when you experience what your people experience. It makes you sympathetic. You know where it pinches.

Let’s see, read and meditate on a further account on how what He suffered became a ministry for Him till this very moment

Hebrews 5:7-10 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

In the days of His flesh [Jesus ] offered up definite, special petitions [ for that which He not only wanted [a]but needed ] and supplications with strong crying and tears to Him Who was [always] able to save Him [out ] from death, and He was heard because of His reverence toward God [His godly fear, His piety, [b] in that He shrank from the horrors of separation from the bright presence of the Father ].

Although He was a Son, He learned [active, special ] obedience through what He suffered

And, [His completed experience ] making Him perfectly [ equipped], He became the Author and Source of eternal salvation to all those who give heed and obey Him,

10 Being [c]designated and recognized and saluted by God as High Priest after the order (with [d]the rank) of Melchizedek.

Jesus, the creator of the heavens and the earth suffered separation from His Father – He experienced what our destiny was going to be like without Jesus so that through that suffering, He became obedient to go to the cross for us. How can He stand us being separated from the loving Father who created us for His pleasure and relationship?  He took that momentary separation from God to deliver the whole of the human race.

The things you suffered, though painful, can become a source of deliverance for someone else, if you will approach them with sympathy and ruthless openness – Seeing those pains as treasures and not trash makes all the difference. That is the daily cross carrying Jesus has called all of us to carry.  Carefully Read and meditate on this text below before we go on—

Luke 9:23 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)23 And He said to all, If any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself [ [a]disown himself, [b]forget, lose sight of himself and his own interests, [c]refuse and give up himself ] and take up his cross daily and follow Me [ [d]cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also ].

Christianity is not a bed of roses, but it is if we let go and let God have His way in our lives through the ups and downs practical school of preparation for the task ahead. So that we can become effective ministers for Him. We can really drill down to our niche by just looking at the pains God brought us through and looking for people in that niche of suffering we suffered

Let’s Read, Meditate on this text below

2 Corinthians 1:3-7 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of sympathy (pity and mercy) and the God [ Who is the Source] of every comfort (consolation and encouragement),

Who comforts (consoles and encourages) us in every trouble (calamity and affliction), so that we may also be able to comfort (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, with the comfort (consolation and encouragement) with which we ourselves are comforted (consoled and encouraged) by God.

For just as Christ’s [[a]own ] sufferings fall to our lot [b][ as they overflow upon His disciples, and we share and experience them ] abundantly, so through Christ comfort (consolation and encouragement) is also [shared and experienced ] abundantly by us.

But if we are troubled (afflicted and distressed), it is for your comfort (consolation and encouragement) and [for your ] salvation; and if we are comforted (consoled and encouraged), it is for your comfort (consolation and encouragement), which works [in you ] when you patiently endure the same evils (misfortunes and calamities) that we also suffer and undergo.

And our hope for you [our joyful and confident expectation of good for you ] is ever unwavering (assured and unshaken); for we know that just as you share and are partners in [our ] sufferings and calamities, you also share and are partners in [our ] comfort (consolation and encouragement).

The contents you see me write twice a week did not come via a special seminary or some special school where you can obtain a degree or award. I got them from the fiery line of the practical school of life – the life experiences. They didn’t seem pleasant then and the Holy Spirit became my spiritual mentor through them all. Some brethren came alongside me, did their part and they went off to some other task to the next level of preparation. They are like scaffoldings in our lives for a season but the permanent teacher and instructor is the Holy Spirit, hence our need to understudy Him and know how He deals with us.

Driven by my intent to cover up for my flawed sense of significance, self-worth and security, exacerbated by the attempted abortion by my earthly mum and instability in my growing up years, I got married at 26 to my classmate with whom we competed in class for first or second position in almost every test and examination in school.

We took the competition to the home and the marriage never lasted. It was built on a very wrong foundation – Trying to catch the sense of significance, self-worth, and security from an earthly relationship is like trying to catch the wind moving at 36,000 km per sec. Those three SS should have come from Christ and Christ alone. I also learned a vital lesson from that school – Never marry a partner where your personalities are just too close for comfort.

That experience is helping in my current relationship, in our counseling sessions with married couples and those intending to get married. I have read every book imaginable on how to keep a home –

Our daughter was 5 when we broke up. She could not comprehend what was going on. That altered her sense of significance, self-worth, and security to the worse side of the scale. Before she finished her secondary education in France, she was already seeing a psychologist. They said she had bipolar issues – A chemical imbalance in the brain, after medical examination. They put her on drugs. She got to the university and stopped taking the drugs and she went ballistics, disappearing from school.

I flew to France for more than three weeks searching from one part of town to the other. We finally found her in a Psychiatric home. I cried my heart out that night to God, reminding Him of a vision He showed me that she was going to be a woman of God. I was trying to figure out how that was going to happen. By the time she ended up in the hospital a second time for more than a year and her birthday was approaching, I asked God for a gift and I began intense warfare in private and praying with our prayer team. I drew a line in the ground between me and the devil and told him, “You are getting out her tonight – You have gone too far – enough is enough.” I sense something lift from her from that very moment – She was in France, I was praying in Nigeria.

Remember, in the spirit realm, there is no time or space – you move at the speed of your thought. By the next day, the hospital staff were perplexed at the sudden change in her. Since then, she has never stepped into that hospital again – Glory be to God!

Read and meditate on these scriptures below and you can confront the lie the enemy is telling you in any area in your spirit, soul, and body –

Ephesians 6:12-16 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

12 For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [ contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are ] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

13 Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger ], and, having done all [the crisis demands ], to stand [firmly in your place].

14 Stand therefore [hold your ground ], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God,

15 And having shod your feet in preparation [ to face the enemy with the [a]firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness [b]produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace.

16 Lift up over all the [covering ] shield of [c]saving faith, upon which you can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked [one ].

And this one

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

For though we walk (live) in the flesh, we are not carrying on our warfare according to the flesh and using mere human weapons.

For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood ], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,

[Inasmuch as we ] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [ true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One),

Being in readiness to punish every [ insubordinate for his] disobedience, when your own submission and obedience [ as a church] are fully secured and complete.

There is no issue in life that the word of God has no cover for. You just need to know the truth that will bring light to those circumstances or situation for deliverance to emerge. That made me begin to carry out some further investigation both in the secular sphere and in the book of life so that I can be a tool in God’s hands to deliver others – I didn’t want to waste my pain and today, we look with sympathy and complete openness to people in similar circumstances as we look for every available means to be a blessing to them so that they can be a blessing to others.

See also  The School of the Holy Spirit - 46 of 52 - Part 34 The Secret of walking with God + How to Help people who are under visible influence of any kind of curses

It’s a chain reaction – Jesus started it, we must continue in it until He returns – Just focusing on preaching, praying, and having a nice time in church won’t cut it. We must take Spirit or prophetic led actions to address the problem people have and have it leave people.

After the breakup of the first marriage, getting some background information about my birth, I knew God had a plan for me that I still have not figured out completely and if I must fulfill this purpose, I can’t just marry any kind of beautiful lady that comes along. I went into prayer again and the Lord showed me my present wife and she indeed has become a comfort to my past pains and a friend coming along my side to fulfill the destiny of God for our lives.

She is passionate about children ages 0 to 5 years. I say 0 because a lot happens from within the womb. My wife is able to see sometimes the sex of a child before they are born and we now know that so many things go south within this age group. Our ministry to orphans and widows is now poised to focus on this age group primarily and their parents. She also has had training working with this age group for 11 years in our Lagos fellowship Church.

Myself, my wife, and children have gone through several internal healing and deliverance processes and we still doing this for others as well. Most of the symptoms we see stem from an internal disorder that were results of direct and indirect factors. We jointly counsel couples over the phone and rely heavily on the leading of the Holy Spirit.

So, why did I take time to share this intimate information with you? Because sharing this information is already delivering some people and they are also open to share theirs where they can then get help. To whom much is given, much is expected. Put another way, to whom God has provided the opportunity to go through rough battles and come out strong, to whom He will give the next big assignment.

David killed the lion and the bear in the backside of nowhere when no one was looking and took on the giant and prevailed in the public ( 1 Samuel 17 ). When he succeeded with that, God took him again into the wilderness running away from Saul ( 1 Samuel 21) which was another level of preparation on sensitivity to Gods voice and dependence on God for every little step before he became a king in public.

Can a Christian be possessed or under the influence of demonic spirit and How do we troubleshoot that?

Yes, Yes, and Yes again. Do you still lie at times, cheat at times, morally fail at times? Who is the father of lies? Satan. So where is he operating from? Through our thoughts – Your though realm is the spirit realm – it is invincible and real. Thoughts have a presence. You are a product of your thoughts. Your thoughts determine your feeling and your feeling determines your actions. The scriptures says as a man thinks, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). You are spirit in an earthly (dust vessel) that processes information through the mind and the mind is made of the Soul which is broken down into the conscious and subconscious. This is invincible to the eye but they are real and they are there. The devil can take residence in your thought life and take it over if you allow him to expand the territory. The Holy Spirit also talks to your mind as well. The mind is where you make sense of your environment – the will, the emotions, and the intellect. The faculty of speech and speech interpretation is there. That is why we say the battlefield is in the mind. Read and meditate on these scriptures and I will give some real-life scenarios for you to ponder over…

2 Corinthians 10:5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Galatians 5:17For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Luke 11:23-26 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

23 He who is not with Me [ siding and believing with Me] is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me [ engage in My interest], scatters.

24 When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it roams through waterless places in search [of a place ] of rest (release, refreshment, ease); and finding none it says, I will go back to my house from which I came.

25 And when it arrives, it finds [the place] swept and put in order and furnished and decorated.

26 And it goes and brings other spirits, seven [of them ], more evil than itself, and they enter in, settle down, and dwell there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first.

Matthew 7:21-23 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name and driven out demons in Your name and done many mighty works in Your name?

23 And then I will say to them openly (publicly), I never knew you; depart from Me, you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands ].

Starting from the last text in Matthew, you see that these people were going about the work of the master but in disobedience and that disobedience gave the devil an inch in their lives. You see somebody dripping with so much anointing and the next moment, the devil takes over at his most vulnerable moment. Every space we give the devil, he takes over and expands to carry out the work of killing and destroying using us as a launching pad. Some have inner wounds that the devil can latch unto. Some have bitterness against their siblings, children, mothers, fathers, relations, and the like and that realm is the devil’s realm and He can come for that slot as legal right to do damage through you.

See what Jesus said about Himself relative to satans ministry –  John 14:30 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)30 I will not talk with you much more, for the prince (evil genius, ruler) of the world is coming. And he has no claim on Me. [He has nothing in common with Me; there is nothing in Me that belongs to him, and he has no power over Me. ]

The devil has absolutely no power against God’s born again children who are walking and working in obedience to God’s words and if he does, it is because we are ignorant of our rights. We willingly hand over our legal right to satan and we get punished for our ignorance. When we get the truth, he has no option but to leave our lives. We get into a realm that gives him legal right to that piece of real estate in our minds.

The devil plaque the vulnerable – People who are in some kind of difficulty, or pain or deep hurts or inner wounds and he takes over that territory and launches on other parts. The spirit of God and the demonic spirit can operate in the same piece of real estate. We have seen pastors delivered of demonic oppression.

When we close the opening that allowed them in, by shining the word of God upon it and repenting, he has no option but to go. If we continue to hold on to the wound or whatever it is that have provided the crack, if you cast him out, he will return with a vengeance.  Read and meditate on this text

Ecclesiastes 10:8 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)He who digs a pit [for others ] will fall into it, and whoever breaks through a fence or a [stone ] wall, a serpent will bite him.

Don’t break the hedge. Be angry and do not sin. Do not go to bed angry with somebody…You have provided an opening for the kingdom of darkness to attack you or the person you are angry against.

We have seen people delivered only for the foul spirit to return. We have seen people very active in church, love the lord and have demons following them everywhere they go because there is something satan is laying claim to in our lives. We have seen pastors delivered. The fact of the matter is that, once the light comes, repentance is secured, a child of God can command it to leave. If it is not total possession, you can send it parking immediately by yourself…but you must do the needful – identify the opening, close it and stand on the authority Christ has given you. Some open the door through movies – horror, pornography, sexually charged movies, violent movies etc – through the eye gate, ear gate, nose gate, touch gate and others – Read and meditate on

Proverbs 4:23 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)23 Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.

So, How do you troubleshoot the demonic in a vessel? This list is not complete:

1)    Continuous fear – Morning, afternoon, evening and night with no particular reason attached and you have no control

2)    Uncontrollable anger against anything that has to do with God, the bible and Christ and you can tell why

3)    Illness that travels the body or some illnesses that go off when prayer is going on and comes back later after prayer

4)    Spirit husbands and spirit wife that are consistent and physical signs after encounters

5)    Unexplainable physical power that you know did not originate from you

6)    Thoughts that are unwholesome and not from you

7)    Hearing condemnatory voices that others can’t hear or see continuously

8)    A word against the devil irritate you deeply and you want to do something about it

9)    Rebellion against any kind of authority

10) Continuous pattern of destruction in our life or rejection from others or continuous bad luck with no sensible reason for it

These are just a few, there are more.. The best way to go about it is to ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you if there is a contrary spirit in you, what door provided entry that needs to be closed and how you can get them off. Ask for help from ministers who have boldness and experience in this area. God has blessed the body of Christ with the gift and they might not necessarily be in your local assembly- search out for them by the leading of the Holy Spirit if you lack confidence.

Some deliverance happens as the light of God comes to that specific area without you even sensing any external manifestation. Some demons attached themselves to a false doctrine like people who do not believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit which apart from helping you in service, also energizes you for warfare. The devil operates in secrecy and wants God’s children to be ignorant of these things which our bondages. Only in this ignorance that God permits His children to suffer.. read and meditate on

Hosea 4:6 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you [the priestly nation ] have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to Me; seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

As we continue the series, we will bring further explanation in detail on various doors or root cause that we have opened and simple prayers or templates that can be used to get them out and also to stay out as we maintain a renewed mind in those areas by applying God’s truth to them.

Now, Let’s explore What is a Root Cause, What Strategies Should we use to Deal with a Root Cause and How do we get to the point of Decision about continuing with Counseling for a counselee?

The Bible speaks of a spiritual root that bears bitterness (Deuteronomy 19:18).  Jeremiah was told to “root out” sin (Jeremiah 1:10), and the prophet Malachi shows God dealing with the root of transgressions in the lives of His people (Malachi 4:1).

An important aspect of biblical counseling is dealing with the root causes of negative behaviors or situations.  Dealing with root causes is aptly illustrated in the story of a man named Joash, an Old Testament king, who was facing a formidable enemy and came seeking advice from the Prophet Elisha.

Elisha made a powerful prophetic declaration and demonstration to Joash.  He told him to take a bow and arrows in his hand.  The king obliged, and Elisha placed his hands over those of the king.  He told Joash to open the window towards the enemy nation of Syria.  Then he commanded: “‘Shoot”; and he shot. And he said, “The arrow of the Lord’s deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; for you must strike the Syrians at Aphek till you have destroyed them” (2 Kings 13:17, NKJV).

Next, Elisha commanded the king to take the arrows and strike them on the ground.  Joash complied, hitting the ground three times and then stopping.  Elisha told him,  You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck Syria till you had destroyed it!” (2 Kings 13:19, NKJV).   What Elisha was declaring prophetically was that the king should have persevered until the enemy was totally defeated.  If you do not deal with the root causes of issues, then like an unquenched fire they will flare up again.  Destroy the root and you will kill the fruit.

From this encounter, we learn several important strategies for dealing with root causes.

Win first in the secret chamber. What happened between Elisha and King Joash in the secret chamber determined the outcome of the battle with Syria.   It is what happens in the “secret chamber” with the Lord that determines the effectiveness of your counseling ministry as well as other areas in your spiritual life.

Use the Sword of the Spirit.  Elisha  told King Joash, “Take up the bow and arrows.”  The Apostle Paul said, “Take the sword of the Spirit.”  It is the Sword of the Spirit–which is God’s Word–that makes your counseling effective and truly Christian.

Put your hands on the weapon.  Elisha told the king to put his hands upon the bow, then Elisha laid his hands upon the king’s hands.  The biblical strategy is your hand upon the weapon of Gods Word and His hand on yours as you minister to the counselee.

Open the window.  Israel’s foe was to the east, so Elisha told the king to open the window eastward.  God wants you to open up the “windows” of every area of the counselee’s life to enable them to confront the failures, problems, and bondages caused by the enemy.  Open the windows towards the enemy and prepare to attack every issue with the Word of God!

Shoot.  Elisha told the king, “Shoot,”  and the king shot.  The open window towards the enemy is not enough.  The weapon in your hand is not sufficient. Even God’s hand upon your hand will not win the battle.  You must follow the command of the Lord of Hosts to “Shoot!”   As you speak the prophetic, powerful, specific Word of God to the counselee, you will execute preemptive strikes against the work of the enemy in their lives. And God’s Word does not return void.  It accomplishes its supernatural purposes  (Isaiah 55:11).

Persevere to the root of the issue.  Elisha told the king to take the arrows and hit them on the ground as a symbol of his victory over Syria.  The king did this, but only struck the ground three times and then stopped.  Elisha told him that because he limited God by hitting the ground only three times, his military victory would be limited.   Elisha said the Lord wanted the enemy to be totally consumed.  By striking the ground only three times, the king settled for partial victory.

The Lord’s objective for you and the person you counsel is total victory in every area of  life and ministry.  You must attack the root causes of problems and battle spiritually until you have achieved 100% victory.

THE POINT OF DECISION

The New Testament records two powerful stories about people who came to a point of decision, but refused to deal with root issues in their lives.  The first is that of a rich young ruler.

A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good–except God alone.  You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’ ‘All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”   When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth.  (Luke 18:18-23)

This young man was a good, moral, law-abiding person.  He had kept many commandments of the Word of God faithfully, but he had a root issue in his life that needed correction.  He valued money more than His commitment to the Lord.  This was evident when Jesus told him to sell what he had and come and follow Him.  Sadly, the young man rejected Christ’s counsel, went his own way,  and missed his divine destiny.

The second story  is that of a multitude of disciples who were following Jesus.   They were excited about the miracles they were witnessing and the anointed teaching they were receiving.

But when the Lord shared truths that they did not want to accept, many of them turned back and no longer followed Him  (John 6:66).  The root of the problem was that they rejected the Word of the Lord and this resulted in them turning back to the old life.

In every counseling situation, there is a root cause of problems that must be exposed on the basis of  the scriptures.   It is at that point that the counselee will either accept or refuse God’s Word.  Sadly, many are like the rich young ruler and these followers of Jesus.  They refuse the Word, go away sorrowing, and return to their old life.

Do not perceive responses like this as personal rejection or failure in your ministry of counseling. The Bible states:  “Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 4:8).

WHAT IS THE ROOT CAUSE?

It is vital that you persevere to discover the root cause of every problem. For example, the root cause is not drug addiction, it is what is fueling the drug addiction.  The root cause is not immorality, it is the lust resulting in the immoral behavior.

The Bible commands us to diligently seek and destroy the roots of sinful behavior:

Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled. (Hebrews 12:15)

If the root causes of problems are not dealt with, then  problems will only intensify.  When Israel invaded the promised land, God told them not to allow any of the enemy to remain.  But the Bible records that Joshua spared giants in three cities: Gaza, Ashdod, and Gath (Joshua 11:21‑22)Later, the Bible relates that Samson got in trouble in Gaza (Joshua 16); the ark of  God’s glory was lost in Ashdod (1 Samuel 4-5); and Goliath paralyzed the troops of Israel in Gath (1 Samuel 17).  None of these tragedies would have occurred, had not the giants been left in the land.  Israel left a root, and it bore fruit.  Giants beget giants in both the natural and spiritual worlds.  Eliminate the spiritual giants of sin and they will no longer reproduce.

Deal with the root causes, and the surface manifestations will cease. As in the natural world, so it is in the spiritual:  Cut the root and you will kill the fruit of the root.
